According to Wikipedia Stig only swam 236 feet, not 250. But also: " In May 2012 Stig was awarded the record of “Longest time breath held voluntarily (male)” by Guinness World Records for holding his breath for 22 min."

If you think Stig’s swimming in a cold lake is great, read the book “Swimming to Antarctica”.

True memoir of a woman who swam in extremely cold waters, like those in the Antarctic Also swimming from Alaska to Siberia.

A short distance map-wise, but actually more than that, counting in the currents.

Holding your breath for a long period of time is possible. We were cautioned about it in SCUBA diving, not because of the expansion of the air when you rise, its because your body forgets how to breathe. Someone else needs to be there to get you started again, I can’t remember if it is a chop to the back of the head or something else. Pearl divers do the same thing.
