Even a Hispanic has to get a liking to their heritage’s literature (by which I mean “Don Quixote”)

When I was in 2nd grade I told my mom I wanted books for Christmas. She was ecstatic! She got me “Little Women,” “Little Men” and “8 Cousins” by Louisa May Alcott, “Call of the Wild” by Jack London and “Tom Sawyer” by Mark Twain" and a couple of others that escape my memory at the moment. Best Christmas EVER!!!

I had an aunt who worked for a publisher and always gave me books. She gave me good advice too: “Go to the library”

OK Gracie, do you want Cervantes’ novel abridged or unabridged (I presume the latter)?

The Spanish version did not have “Animal Farm”, but Señor de las Moscas" (Lord of the Flies).

Animal farm is too dark for a kid that age. Treasure Island is good and so is the Hobbit.

I figured that Señor de los Moscos was Lord of the Flies, but I looked it up on spanishdict.com anyway, just to confirm. Lord of the Gnats? Master of the Mosquitos? I STILL think it’s Lord of the Flies.

Lord of the Flies in Hebrew is Baal Zevuv (Beelzebub). Zevuv, zevuv, zevuv – can you hear them? That’s what the pig’s head was about. It is a very pessimistic story about original sin.

I’m a little disturbed. there is nothing on this list written after 1945. Only two of these books were written in the 20th century.

Why hasn’t she read anything published from the last fifty years?

That’s what I want for Christmas, too, so I can buy more books to read. Being in a Barnes and Noble—or any other bookstore or library—is an adventure, but there are SO MANY titles to choose from! Ah. . .so many books, so little time!

Nicole, your idea of a Kindle for Gracie is a good one!! My daughter told me to quit buying paper books and get a Kindle 2.5 years ago. I’m glad I did!! I can borrow books from the Kindle Lender’s Library..get lots of free books…all in addition to the ones I buy.

While I appreciate the possible convenience enjoyed by readers of electronic devices, might I add that NOTHING is the same as the pages between one’s fingers……….

Gracie, I suppose you might try Don Quixote in its original language?
