Doonesbury by Garry Trudeau for December 20, 2013
Transcript:
Alex: Crazy world, huh, Mia? Where a PhD barista hires a PhD nanny? Mia: Starbucks must pay well. Alex: Not especially. But they offer medical, dental, 401k, stock options, and free coffee. Mia: Seriously? All that for part-time work? Alex; Uh... yes. Mia: Hunh. Alex: What have I done?

GT is having problem with continuity. The November 19 strip clearly shows Alex working as a waitress in a full service restaurant, not as a barista in Starbucks. At least, I have never seen a Starbucks like that.-http://www.gocomics.com/doonesbury/2013/11/19-By the way, the twins’ names areDANNY & ELI

A part time job offers THOSE benefits? What are you smokin’, GT, and why aren’t you sharing?

For starters, many cab drivers in Cuba are PhDs – goes to show that systems may be more similar than they appear…

Alex, meet you new co-worker

Must be Trudeau doesn’t have the guts to show the real PhDs that can’t find work. Namely liberal arts PhDs. Got a friend with one in Archaeology, if you can’t teach it or get a dig you don’t work.
kaffekup about 11 years ago
I have a friend who is an archaeologist, doesn’t teach, is not on a dig, and works all of the time. There’s a lot of local work on construction sites to make sure no relics are found, and around the country doing rock art conservation and things like that. He even wrote a textbook on basic archaeology.

Alex has patents, experience (her successful web stie), and a comp sci PhD from MIT. Her lowest offer would be what, $200,000 a year. Comp sci BS’s from Ivy league schools are routinely getting over a 100.
GT doesn’t want to admit that our choices affect our circumstances.
Too bad those technical studies are so damn boring

Since the twin babies are already thinking in complete sentences, Alex could exhibit them at the circus, or (same thing), a TV “reality” show. In other words: this isn’t a documentary, people!
montessoriteacher about 11 years ago
Oops.
montessoriteacher about 11 years ago
I am sure babies can think in terms of complete sentences, they just can’t say them. Especially if their 5 senses are working, they are constantly taking in information, like a sponge, they are building those brain cells as they grow.

I didn’t think Starbucks still offered all those bennies any more!
montessoriteacher about 11 years ago
There will probably be a babies first christmas reference coming soon. 5 more days to go on that.

“Better to have you money kept in a place safe from the vagaries of the Market. Don’t you?”-But money is never safe. The value of the dollar is subject to fall at any time. The value of any currency is subject to fall at any time.
The value of any commodity or industry is subject to drop at any time as other things replace them.If there were really a safe place to keep money, all money would be kept there.-Throw in the fact that all money is imaginary, holding any sort of value at all only as a medium of exchange and we live in a shaky world, governed by the confident clueless.

When I threw money at a 401k, it seemed to lose money every quarter, regardless of market performance or investment mix. Just another way to redistribute income upward.

Yeah, “The rich get richer and the poor get poorer.”Because the rich control the system and get whatever they want. Sounds fair to me.
