Even if they have watched our football, they may not have heard the word outside of unfamiliar context, or thought of it as being a distinct part of the game…. – Picking up on details like that will be much like hearing certain “layers” or “nuances” to some songs that one may not have noticed much, before…

The rest of the world watches rugby or football (soccer to you). Me, I prefer to avoid all such activities. From the gracious replies above, I am confirmed in my belief that American football is incomprehensible outside the North American continent.
