Ralph: I'm making you a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for lunch! Norman: You didn't make it right, dad! You put the jelly on bottom! The peanut butter is supposed to be on the bottom! Ralph: Who cares? Norman: I do! If the jelly is on the bottom, it won't taste right! Ralph: Norm, there's a very simple solution to this problem! Look! It's a sandwich! If you want the peanut butter to be on the bottom, all you have to do is hold it upside down! Norman: Oh yeah, huh! Why didn't I think of that? (upside down) Yeah, this works! Ralph: ... Sigh...

This reminds me of Buddy and Jim from “Sesame Street,” when they tried to fix a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Actually they’re both wrong. Peanut butter goes on both pieces of bread, and the jelly goes between them. That way there is no top or bottom to the sandwich, and the jelly doesn’t soak into one of the bread slices (better for if you are packing a lunch and won’t be eating the sandwich for several hours).

I’ve always preferred putting the jelly on first, then the peanut butter. That way they mix somewhat together, so that the peanut butter portion will hold the two slices together, instead of one slice sliding off. The jelly doesn’t drip as badly when held in a vertical position that way too.
