As one who pays exorbitant licensing fees to licensing lawyers for the right to produce products with said university logos and sell them right back to the university store, I have to agree… Team logos and university logos are essentially the same thing, and I don’t understand (but I actually do – the lawyers make more money on the university brand than the universities do – they always do!)

Greg, you were smart not to create a logo that actually resembled any real one … they’d sue your butt in a nano-second! :-)

I wear some Ohio State stuff. People always ask if I’m a Buckeye fan. It’s very confusing when I tell them I love the school and know nothing about their sports programs. Ohio State hosts the triennial Festival Of Cartoon Art. I’ve been going since ’89.

Greg, I don’t know where you live, but if people find out that you live in Ohio, you don’t have to be wearing anything in particular for others to assume that you follow OSU’s football plan. Never mind that it’s hard to avoid tripping over universities in this state, or that I went to school half the country away.

“Are you a buckeye?”“Yes, I am”“What do you think about their changes at coaching?”“… huh?”“Their new football coach!”“… I don’t think the Browns have a chance in hell this year. Or were you talking about the Bungles?”“… I meant OSU.”“Oh. No clue, I don’t follow them. I don’t follow the Browns or the Bungles, either, but hell, a sure bet is a sure bet.”“You said you were a buckeye.”“Yes, I’m from Ohio. It’s the state tree (despite there not being all that many of them, in comparison) and what we call ourselves.”“…”“You see, back when the indians and the white men blah blah blah…” [listener’s eyes glaze over]

It’s a great state. But it’s a whole lot more than a football team. And it’s a not-bad university. That’s a whole lot more than a football team.

In Alabama, there is no difference. The sports program is the school.

I think I’ve put this in the strip before- When someone talks about ‘Their’ school, ask who the coach is. You usually get an instant answer- they don’t even say which sport, just tell you The Coach. Ask who the head of the Physics department is, and you get some blank stares. You can then apologize and say that was a silly question, then say, “I meant the head of the English department.” Pause. “Any teacher at all?” “Anybody?” “Bueler?” … I’m not sure we’re putting the right emphases on our various higher educational programs. (Hey, look, I used the plural of ‘emphasis’!)

@Greg Cravens: I love it. Well done. Although, probably more people do remember the name of the English department where/when I went to college, just because his name was—I kid you not—Bill Shakespeare. (I’ve always thought his parents definitely typecast him from birth.)

The fact that the football, basketball, and hockey coaches are often the highest paid employees at most flagship universities bugs the heck out of me. It almost makes the ridonkulous chancellor’s salaries of $420,000-480,000 seem reasonable.

I did the college route. no sports team. I don’t even recall if my tech school had a sports team. .. … beginning to feel left out..on the other hand I got a lot of thumbs up from some of the military type gamers about my tee – “Salt and Burn” with a charred skeleton lying in the rubble.
