Toggle: Been enjoying... course, Dr. Shiply! Professor: Thank you, Leo... I'm afraid it's not a big favorite of the music department. My colleagues don't think too much of my syllabus. Toggle: Wh... what? GN'R? Slayer? Metallica? That... important music! Professor: Of course it is! And how do we know that, Leo? Toggle: Makes... makes ears bleed! Professor: Correct! Or faces melt. Scholars disagree.

Dr. Shiply: … How do we know this, Leo? Leo: Makes ears bleed. Dr. Shiply: Correct… .
They’re kidding around, I know, but it also shows the “Pavlov’s Dog” method of teaching: ask a stock question, get the expected stock answer, and you get a pat on the head by the instructor. Heck, a voice recorder playing back the answers could be the valedictorian at most high schools. (And if it was at my high school, the voice recorder would not have had any less personality.)

He’s the type of prof I try to be – with all my students, but especially my vets!
To all the service members and vets from yesterday’s conversation – Thank you for your service.
And Brad – if you see this – I knew you were kidding about the Marines being illiterate. I saw your ” :) ” and raised you a “heh”. Heh.

anybody notice that on anniversary of Roe vs. Wade, and cusp of trial of guy who shot abortion doctor, Sarah Palin and daughter and their babies are covergirls with the caption “We’re glad we chose life”?
And Leo is mesmerized by her out-takes…..

Bleeding ears? Melting faces? That’s nothing. As a reviewer in the 80’s described them, King Crimson live could peel wallpaper 5 miles away. Crimson makes the “popular” metal bands sound like a bunch of folksingers.

Metallica? the “kill napster because it cuts into my profits” group?
I notice that Toggle is walking with his bad side towards the prof. That’s illogical.

Potz, it kind of makes sense to me. He has someone covering the side of him that is vulnerable, leaving his good side open to be cognizant of the situation. Maybe that’s just my interpretation of it though.

And Metallica, GnR, and Slayer are fine, but ears bleeding face melting music to me is more like Drowning Pool, Dope, Disturbed, or Mudvayne..

I believe Duke once used the reference, “would sterilize frogs from a 100 yards.”
Like he said. Scholars differ.

@Radish: Dr Shipley doesn’t teach modern culture; Dr Shipley teaches students!
And it sure seems to this community college math teacher that he’s doing a brilliant job of reaching Leo in a way that will last forever and make a real difference in his life!
BTW @Susan001, I like a Gershwin tune, too ;)

Never studied Metallica as an undergrad. The closest we got to making ‘ears bleed’ we ever got was The Beatles.
There is some contemporary orchestral stuff that will do that, though.

I agree with MisngNOLA , he has someone he trusts on his blind side, which allows him to watch out for anything coming at him from the other side.

I think it’s just logistics of the conversation in comic strip form. Leo is on the left because he’s the first to speak, it’s easier to read the conversation in a straight line from left to right.

I think that to Toggle & Dr. Shiply this is classical music.
