This explains a lot of what I’ve been seeing from interns. Some apply themselves in hopes of gaining a full-time job. Some watch Netflix and wait for their internship to be over.
Speaking as both former student and former college professor, I believe we should go back to sending a student’s grades to the one who pays the student’s tuition. If it’s the student, send him his grades. If it’s the parents, send them the grades, and let the chips fall.
A long long time ago I had a chemistry professor who noticed a steep drop in the attendance of his pretest review classes. As a result one day he had Chemistry is Phun written on the chalk board when we showed up for a review class. The next day the first question worth something like 1/3 of the test was the question Chemistry is (correct four letter description). Those of us who had attended the review knew the answer in his little joke, those who didn’t failed the test………
The fact that professors are tenured mean many don’t try to make their lectures engaging or even relevant to students. In the 80s we didn’t have screens but we found other ways to sleepwalk through dull lectures—and passed the tests too.
Restaurants could also employ in- house paintball snipers to target cell phone users. Or perhaps offer the paintball gun to those customers sitting nearest the oblivious yakker.
I was a little worried when I saw the last panel. Then I read the strip. Good move prof. And the sniper drops a grade or percentage point if he hits anything other than the electronic device. .Attached as I am to my own electronic device – I believe none of those things should be in use by students during class time.
Just to clarify the point of the commenter who thinks the students pay the professor’s salary: very few students pay as much as 50% of the cost of their education. At state universities, the taxpayers pick up the tab. At private universities, there is a lot of financial aid. What’s left is paid either by the parents, or by the Feds on student loans that the students don’t really think about paying back. While most of my students do pay attention in class, I retired a year early because of the widespread opinion among senior engineering students that they should pass the course by doing half the work.
“Mr Green, there’s something you do which just bugs the Hell out of me.”Oh shoot, what have I done now that the professor interrupts his lecture over? Of course it might not be me, there are three Greens in this class. Nope, not Steve, he’s on the other side of the room. Me or my brother, Howard, behind me..“If you can’t stay awake in my class, why bother to come?”.Nope, wasn’t me, I was awake. Must’ve been Howard..After class, Howard went down to the professor and explained he had swim class just before Physics and that the chlorine was burning his eyes. Hence, their closure. But if the professor wondered if he had been awake, just ask him anything from the lecture..The question was concluded with an appology and his closed eyes were never mentioned again, especially as Howard made 100s on all tests. Things are not always as they seem..Classmates asked ME — on the other hand — about my sleeping episode months and even years later. They thought I was the culprit..Life goes on and it is good.

It’s not like the Teacher has a RESPONSIBILITY to present the material in an interesting and engaging way, is it?
You know, actually try to make it RELEVANT to the Students who are PAYING his SALARY!

Zero tolerance gun-free zone. Lock the kid up and then lock the professor up for making threats and assault!

Red marks on the student to match the red marks on the student’s research paper.

If you don’t want to learn, why are you either accumulating massive debt or getting your parents to accumulate debt?

Ashamed to say I stayed in school for the deferment from the Viet Nam war when we still had the draft.
I believe I mostly learned the skill of how to learn, rather then become a repository of facts.
