Zonker: You know, Uncle Duke, I think you ought to start giving some serious thought sometime to straightening yourself out. Duke: Right you are, Zonk-- I damn near blew out all my tubes on that last number, didn't I? That kind of deranged behavior just can't go on! In fact, I'm thinking that in a few days I might just go back to Aspen and try to turn over a new leaf-- you know, settle down, raise a family, buy a labrador... open up a little massage parlor. Zonker: Oh, Duke...

I’m going to just throw this out there: you know the phrase “mean drunk”, “Don’t talk to me until after I’ve had my coffee”, “nicotine withdrawal”. I have never heard of anything resembling those in regards to pot, i.e. “Wow that stoner is such a nightmare” Just a casual observation.

“Maybe you haven’t noticed but Alcohol has been legal for almost the entire time we have been a country, its a true Killer drug along with Nicotine. No laws need to be passed to allow this.”..I hope you don’t think Duke is the way he is due to alcohol or marijuana.

Now I see it. After all these years. Zonker may be a little left of crazy. Talking plants and all. But he is centred. Knows when too much really is too much. Always has known..and Duke will take his own path.

This batch of reprints is fascinating. I don’t recall ever seeing this sequence before. I know the reprint collections were never all-inclusive, but I’d always thought we’d first met Duke (with his ever-present shades, conspicuously absent here) in his office, “Killing bats with my ruler! BIG ones, too!”
