Earl’s excuse: HIS arthritis (which he doesn’t have) is also acting up. Also, seems like Opal’s hearing is going off. Earl asked what width, not with what.
I would have thought it far more probably for Earl to hear “width” and think “with” – actually I am surprised Earl thought of width of strips at all (and that Opal didn’t). Weird.
hillsmom: Lena Horne, and the definitive version. You can hear Horne’s blood pressure rise throughout, while Belafonte stays as cool as can be. I think he may have recorded it with Odetta, but the Horne version is best.
DavidHuieGreen: It is one of many antiphonal folk songs with the female singing Liza and the male Georgie. I dig the “late youth”. I got into folk music in the dying days of ballad chasing. You found a new one and learned it on the spot and wrote it down later, unless you had a Library of Congress grant like John and Alan Lomax. After that, radio with the Weavers and Peter, Paul, and Mary tainted the waters too much to get a provenance – but saved a bunch that would have otherwise been lost.

Opal must ride that little short bus when she goes shopping….
Actually, my wife does the same thing to me – hard to tell if she’s BS’ing me or on the level sometimes. Ahhh, married life!

If Opal’s cutting the fabric into strips, she should be using a rotary cutter instead of scissors. For once Earl’s question is perfectly logical.

If Opal reads a tape measure like my wife, the answer would be something like, “Three inches and five little lines.”

It’s a bad joke based on a bad pun. Don’t over think it.

Whatever she does wrong, it’s Earl’s fault.

Good thing Opal told him to use scissors. Otherwise Earl might use punning shears.

The JMr and I converse pretty much like that., except he would cut it into squares and then swear I told him to do it that way.
