I always felt Ronald Reagan is spinning in his grave at the thought that conservative American businessmen put Americans out of work and torpedoed the US economy to create jobs and build up the economy of the most populous Communist nation to ever exist. And somewhere, Chairman Mao is laughing, and laughing, and…
Just a note, I keep getting phone calls from the same idiot with a strong Hindi accent trying to claim he’s from Health and Human Services asking for personal information. He obviously doesn’t pass me to a supervisor, or give me a number that I can call him back at.
dukedoug, we all know you don’t have to answer the phone. If it’s important enough they will call again….Why do people feel they have to answer the phone? I forget who said it but a hundred years ago somebody asked “Why would I want a bell in my house that anybody in the world could ring anytime they wanted to..?”
Definition of a job in a customer service call centre: where you get paid minimum wage 24 hours per day and 365 days per year to meet impossible standards to listen to verbal abuse and obscene phone calls.
A few years ago, I had an excellent job in the A/P department of a well known national company. (I won’t mention the company’s name, but their initials are United Rentals.) Then one day, management announced that the department was closing, to be relocated to India. Nice of them. My bank account still hasn’t recovered.
“The trend began in earnest in the late 1970s at large manufacturers such as General Electric. GE’s then CEO, Jack Welch, who was widely respected by other corporate chieftains, argued that public corporations owe their primary allegiance to stockholders, not employees. Therefore, Welch said, companies should seek to lower costs and maximize profits by moving operations wherever is cheapest. “Ideally,” Welch said, “you’d have every plant you own on a barge to move with currencies and changes in the economy.” Not only did GE offshore much of its manufacturing, so did its parts suppliers, which were instructed at GE-orchestrated “supplier migration seminars” to “migrate or be out of business.” ’
We’ve got caller ID so we can screen which calls we choose to answer. Worth a few extra shekels per month. OR you can get an answering machine and if you hear your mom’s voice starting to leave a message, you can pick it up.
Funny how soclassic is the only one who really got the comic. My only tweak: $300 for that Oxford shirt that won’t fit quite right and will fall apart after three months.
Neither are most of us who are working stateside, pal.
And that scene should be inside a convenience store or department store or a tech call center. That’s where most of the people who are working today are located.
Anyone else found it funny/sad that it was announced today that a certain manufacturer of athletic shoes will pay their spokesperson $300 million? This is the same company that a few scant years ago stopped production in Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, because they found they could make their shoes for cheaper elsewhere.

Pathetic, but too true. His coworkers will work a 16 hour day without health and safety conditions for starving wages.
