Everyone: "Happy 18th, Luann!"
Bernice: "Delta and I made you a memory book. Look at us at age 10!"
Delta: "You shouldn't have said "make a wish""
Bernice: "Sorry."
Luann’s still around, but someone else is leaving us! She was around for a little while. So colorful! And some people said she was pretty hot, too! Yeah, I’m going to miss Summer…..
When he was at the Q&A seminar, he mentioned his operation briefly, but he seemed to “take it in stride”, and made it seem as though it was all “over and done with”…..
Thanx, I’ll make sure to tell her! She’ll be tickled to hear! – And belated congrats! I must’ve missed it, this year! Well, as long as you didn’t, ha ha ha!!
Time to find IS Katie and traipse up the stairs! ’Nite all!-——————————————————————————“The only liberty I mean, is a liberty connected with order; that not only exists along with order and virtue, but which cannot exist at all without them.”(Edmund Burke, 1729-1797; Speech at his arrival in Bristol, 3 November 1774).
One character who vanished without moving overseas was Luann’s tiny suitor Elwood. I suppose mini-Elvis is still around, somewhere, but he’s just disappeared into his cowboy boots, until Greg Evans thanks he needs him again. And there is a tiny bit of hope for Aaron Hill, since being deported from the strip is at least theoretically possible to be reversed (at least, if you’re deported to Australia or Japan…).
Mr. Upchurch’s artistry is actually quite impressive.
Yes, it is. But I think they picked the 10yo versions of the characters to give him a good “dress rehearsal.” The true test will be for him to attempt to draw the modern day characters. If we can’t tell the difference, then yeah, he would be impressive.
“Imhotep the Second.”-——————————————————-The Ptolemaic Egyptian polymath had no children so far as we know, so your claiming authority through a non-existent personage is rejected.
That would be a flawed approach. He clearly has his own art style, and should use that instead. Trying to copy Evans art style would be a mistake. I think his art is already much better than Evans earlier work, and I think he’ll have his own style that will rival Evans current work. Besides, Evans has changed his art so often that there’s no distinct style that Luann has to be.
Then, perhaps, that’s the answer. Have Greg’s successor (Mr. Upchurch or otherwise), take the reigns at the next point where Greg would be ready to evolve the characters and their designs. I think that would make for the smoothest transition.
I’m not saying I wouldn’t like what the new artist draws, or that I would not think it better or worse than Greg. I’m just saying it will look noticeably different.
If you compare Bernice in today’s flashback panel with Bernice in today’s “Luann Againn” re-run, you’ll see that Jonathan Upchurch’s rendering more nearly resembles a Charles Schulz kid than a Greg Evans kid. This is not necessarily a bad thing, it’s just a different thing. I would have no problem if members of the present-day cast were to undergo a transformation in their appearance. (In the case of the new character “Sun”, that’s of course really obligatory anyway.)
“Today’s guest artist is Greg’s grandson. Note the signature”*BS – and note the Bonus feature. Welcome, Jonathan! Glad to see you’re spreading your own wings as well as following in Gramp’s legacy!
Fair enough. It will look different, but I’m sure everyone will be accepting of a new artist when that day comes. Evans can’t do this forever, and a new artist is better than no artist.
Agreed. But, as stated above, I think the transition would be better facilitated if the new artist attempted to keep the designs as close to Greg as possible, or at least, to consider evolving the designs at the next appropriate evolutionary point in the characters’ lives (i.e. Lu in her early-mid 20’s, Frank & Nancy beyond their mid-50’s, Brad & Toni as “parents,” etc. ).
Several on-going strips have had new artists in my lifetime, and there were no noticeable differences in the characters… Witness “Andy Capp” (formerly Reg Smythe, now “Mahoney, Goldsmith, and Garnett,”) or “Blondie,” (originally by Chic Young, now Dean Young, Jim Raymond, et al….). Also, “B.C.” and “Wizard of ID”, (originally by John Hart, now by a consortium of his kin – Mastroianni bros, Perri his daughter, etc). In none of these cases did the drawings change noticeably, after the original artist transferred control, or passed away.
For someone as plain and ordinary as Luann, this is sure one mighty big eighteenth birthday party! The “bonus” page verifies this glimpse in panel 2 of the possible future….
I recall seeing an episode of “It’s A Miracle,” a fairly obscure TV show, about Jonathan’s adoptive mother coming to the realization that Greg Evans might be her son’s birth father, and how she went about contacting Greg to confirm it. When I have time, I’ll try to find it and post a link…
And one more thing; if the second panel (as some have pointed out) represents 2 years before the Luann strip began, then she hasn’t even MET Aaron Hill yet, so maybe she IS mooning over Paul McCartney .
Aaron was sent to Hawaii. When Evans doesn’t like or doesn’t know what to do with a character, he deports them. That way if he stops writing about them people don’t wonder why we aren’t getting stories about them. Rosa and Gunther are the only exception, they were deported as part of a story and will likely return at some point.^^Gunther HAS to return, elsewise, how will he finally win Luann back, from that boring pretty boy?
We’ll be lucky if it’s just a week. We had to walk down memory lane for THREE WEEKS with Fogarty. Boy that was miserable.^^I agree with you twice in one week, that could be a record :p
To me, it seems that that’s why it could have been that Evans chose now to have him be a “guest artist”, as this way, it would make for an easier transition, and a good “proving ground”….
“Why do some people never seem to have a good day???”^I guess my own answer would be in the form of a line from a song by the Stylistics: “…But that’s what makes the world go-round, the ups and downs a carousel….” (♫)

I remember too, they were talking about seeing if there would be something to his grandson doing some stuff, in that interview “the Real Luann”…

Did Greg Evans draw the first panel, and did his grandson draw the “flashback”?

LOL, and she’s probably timing it, so by the time anyone notices, it’ll be too late …

I’m disappointed that it looks like we are in for a week walking down Memory Lane when there are some active plots that need to be advanced.

Yeah, an 18th birthday party (marking that you are legally an adult) ought to be more nearly an occasion for looking forward, not looking back.

I was going to guess Charles Shultz was the guest artist after seeing Luann’s mouth in that last panel.
TORAD_07 over 10 years ago
Actually his daughter Karen who is the real life Luann has been helping him for awhile on the strip :)
With the “writing…” not the “drawing…”
It would seem GE’s grandson, Mr. Upchurch, is being groomed for that.

Sorry, but if today is any indication, you’re getting different characters.
Nope. What Mr. Upchurch drew were 10/yo characters… and at an age younger than even Greg himself ever drew. I would expect them to look different.
Now, if Mr. Upchurch had attempted to draw “present day” characters and they looked that different, then yes, they’d be “different.”
