Since the birds just after the bugs that do the real damage to the tree, I’s say this must be an Urban Legend day. Certainly not a woodsman or even a woodpeckersman day.

By the way, that’s Downy woodpecker, not a red-headed one. Likely softened the blow to the tree.

Pileated Woodpecker would be the real world bird that most resembles (pretty close really except for the teeth).

If I were going to draw a hackberry (known as sugarberry in some areas) tree trunk that would pretty much be it.

My guess is that the tree is not a hard wood and is probably actually rotten to the core.

It’s a Pileated Woodpecker alright. Good job on identifying the tree as well.
