I understood the meanings of her extra touches; what I don’t get is why, in the last panel, she doesn’t seem to understand that those are extra touches — does she think angles drawn for math homework are supposed to be so creatively illustrated? What’s the joke?
I remember when I was a child in the 1970’s, we all learned the metric system in school, being told that it was what everything would be measured with in the future. Clearly, educators at the time were under-estimating Americans’ stubborn resistance to change.
I wish my teachers had been right — although I know English measures well, they can be a pain to work with. For example, I bake a lot and often need to reduce/multiply recipes. I long ago memorized all the equivalencies of common measurements, e.g., that that there are 3 teaspoons in a Tablespoon, 2 Tbs in a fluid ounce, 8 oz. in a cup, 2 cups in a pint, 2 pints in a quart, and 4 quarts in a gallon. Based on that system, figuring out all ingredient amounts for 3/4 of a recipe, or 2-1/2 times one, can involve a lot of weird math and I often have to resort to paper and pencil.Metric measurement is just SO much easier for that sort of thing!
(We also should be measuring flour by weight like Europeans do, but that’s another rant….)
Since I’m one of the 6 billion 750 million people who officially use Metric units, and not one of the 374 million people that officially still use the Imperial system, I had to stop and think about this for a minute.

I too am as confused with Paige’s so-called extra touches. Also, what extra touches would she put onto an obtuse angle .

If you’re cold this winter go sit in the corner. It’s 90 degrees there.

If she had to draw an acute angle, she’d probably draw her favorite Boy Band.

On most of the planet, the extra touches would be wrong, except for the last one. Go metric, America!

Wait until she’s asked to do an angle with pi(e).

Well, that’s one way to get math done.

This cartoon proves that Common Core stinks.

The first one: the sun never gets higher than this much above the horizon and it’s cold out!
