New word to me. Love this strip. And love the fact I don’t have to work on Thanksgiving (but will have to work Black Friday).

As my uncle is a firefighter who’s had to miss Christmas before, I appreciate those who have to work holidays. Thank you to those who do jobs vital to keeping society functioning safely..As some one who spent many years in retail. I am refusing to shop at ANY non-grocery store that is open any time between Wend the 26th at 11 pm and Friday the 28th at 6 am. If you don’t like what stores are doing, then speak with your wallet ‘cause that’s all the shareholders listen to. .As for the sales themselves? Shoot, Amazon is a better price on more stuff anyway…

I have had this same discussion with a long time friend, who often gasses on about the poor, poor cashier who “must” work on Thanksgiving due to the greedy corporate interests. The fact that the cashier is likely making time-and-a-half or more to volunteer is besides the point. I “won” the discussion when I asked why my friend doesn’t complain about the poor, poor people who work in the stadiums and arenas that hold sporting events on Thanksgiving and the following day? As a big time sports fan, she didn’t have a response to that.

“Stanch” is in the Webster’s New World Dictionary, but it says “see Staunch”, where the definition is explained. I take this to mean that “Stanch” is an alternate spelling, but “Staunch” is preferred.

Probably, and the spelling may vary by location, just as recently, someone took exception to my spelling humoring without a ‘u’ as in humouring..Noah Webster changed a lot of spellings to make US English different from British English..Some variations stuck, others didn’t. I learned to spell humor without a ‘u’, but staunch with a ‘u.’

To me the name “Black Friday” always makes me think of “Black Tuesday”, the name history gives to the worst day of the Stock Market Crash of 1929. Thus, to me “Black” before a day name implies something dire, without hope. I can’t imagine why they would have named anything after that day, but oh well.

    “Who works on Thanksgiving?”

Well, the parade doesn’t just happen. Nor does the cleanup afterwards. And it doesn’t just get beamed to your television.

Then, of course, there’s the thousands of restaurants and diners that will be open to cater to those unwilling or unable to cook for themselves.

Shall I bring up the airlines’ schedule?

And at least three Broadway shows have performances on Thanksgiving.

And that’s not even taking essentials like police, firefighters, EMTs, and mass transit into account.

So, to answer your question, Caulfield: lots of people.

Considering what NFL players get paid & the fact that they only work half the year, I don’t believe any of them are entitled to complain about “working on Thanksgiving.”

ammittai: Most rants flow. Some are dark and steady and in vein, others gush with a rhythm as from an artery, and some are directly from the heart. The metaphor is apt.

NFL players make how much per game? When they have to sacrifice their bodies to stock shelves at $8 + $4/hr, they can gripe about having to work that day.

Among all the debate on professional athletes, retail operators, medical workers, etc. we forgot to mention one of the most crucial Thanksgiving working class — the folks who prepare the meals! The period/no period/‘u’/no ‘u’ monitors should take the day off, however.
