I don’t know where the old cat is going, but good riddance.

Reminds me of a sequence I saw on “Too Cute”. Kitten is teasing momma, teasing, teasing… then momma brings a paw down… only kitten is no longer there.

It’s the Cat version of Father Time and Baby New Year.

Both @Margaret and @shamino are correct. “Arlo and Janis” often run a parody of the Baby New Year strips; today’s strip is a cat version. Ludwig isn’t like Farley on “For Better or For Worse”, he’s not going anywhere!

I adopted 2 kittens this year and needless to say, my older cat is not amused. So this was so true to my house. Honestly the author must have cats. So does this mean that Ludwig is getting a friend this year?

I see that Johnson plagiarised from “Jump Start” (lower-age Sunnys — much like the lower-age Ludwig representing 2015 in this strip) for this New-Year strip.
