Almost reminds me of Ralph’s brother Randy in “A Chrismtas Story”… except the mother didn’t snicker nor took a photograph.

Oh, Madeline! You are so wicked! That photo will haunt Alice all the days of her life! (But it is a funny sight.)

That’s a point in the Petey column. Maybe two.

I never cared for snow pants either.

I loved snow pants when I was a kid. They were made of nylon and were slippery. It was almost like having a built-in sled.

when I was in elementary school, the dress code did not allow girls to wear pants/trousers. As we were in Ohio, and walked to school unless we had a blizzard, we wore snowpants under our skirts and big, honkin’ snowboots which reached to mid-calf. Then we had to take off the boots and snowpants to follow the dress code, struggle back into to them to go home for lunch, off when back at school, on to go home. I can sympathize with Alice….

God, what we have lost with Richard Thompson’s withdrawal from comic strips! Best wishes always, Mr. Thompson.

Back in the early 70s, female teachers were allowed to wear pantsuits but always had to keep the jacket on in the classroom at all times. Around the mid-70s, they were allowed to remove the jackets. We’ve come a long way, baby. (points for anyone who remembers that jingle/catchphrase).

I love Alice precisely because she’s not the typical cutesy princess. She’s one girl who will be able to take care of herself.

@ N-G49: Those were bone-headed, sexist times. My Elementary school had a similar rule for the first year that my sister went (1967), but dropped it the year after.
