Baldo by Hector D. Cantú and Carlos Castellanos for April 11, 2010
Transcript:
Dad: I like these old-fashioned markets! Dad: It's good to know you're supporting a small business. Baldo: Look! Payment here is on the honor system. Tia Carmen: We're taking a dozen of your farm fresh eggs. Clerk: That'll be $4. Tia Carmen: Why can't everyone be trusting like that? Tia Carmen: There are only ten eggs in here. Baldo: This one's a rock.

I would think Tia would know to check the eggs before paying for them. I always check mine for broken ones. Now I have to keep a look out for rocks too.

How do you have an honor system payment? So if I just went in there with a large bag, filled it up and left I wouldn’t get jailed? Gee no wonder they short change the honest people.

Checking eggs should be a given.
Sometimes the rural farm stands or road side stands in VA will have an honor system payment set up. It is usually a jar or can for people to toss change in, like a tip jar.
Usually what they are selling is overage. The farms are making their real money selling elsewhere.
It is sort of like selling music on-line for what you think it is worth.
People usually will pay something.

I remember stocking my first apartment. I saw the lady before me looking at her eggs so I followed suit. Then I looked at her and asked, “What do they do?”

I remember business that operated on the honor system. They’re few and far between. One place I worked had an honor system for snacks instead of a vending machine. Most people actually overpaid to ensure that there was enough money in the pot. We didn’t want a machine.

I read about a company that supplied pastries to offices in a city that went to an honor system with its clients rather than wheeling a cart around each floor of each company. It wasn’t “Pay what you feel like”, but it was “Leave a dollar in the box when you take one.” Their net profit on each pastry taken dropped a bit because of those who cheated, but they more than made up for it in volume.

$4 a dozen? Most farm fresh eggs for sale here in southeastern Oklahoma are $1-2 a dozen.

You gotta check those eggs for broken ones. I’m surprised Tia doesn’t know that. But I guess the toon is trying to make a different point.

1) Yes, you’d think Tia would know to check the eggs - at least for breakage caused by prior customers.
2) One place I worked I was the assistant boss-type; I had one of those small refrigerators I kept full of Cokes - it will hold 24 cans - and let folks get some on the honor system. Problem was, I kept drinking my profits….

I’ve never seen a produce market with an “honor system” AND a cash register. Usually just a can or box to put the money inside.
