dkram – I once had a house that had a hard-wired avocado dial phone. When telephone deregualtion came around, Southwest Bell told us we had to buy the phone or pay for a lease. They quoted us an outrageously high price for purchase. I agreed to purchase, but sent them about 10% of that. A month later, I received a check in the mail from Southwest Bell for that very amount. I may be the only person in the history of the world to get money back from a phone company.
pamlicorat - it’s sunny there? Here it’s like freezing fog - no kidding! It was only 32 Wed. night - can’t put my tomatoes out yet at all….Oregon….weird winter/spring….
Great minds think alike. Zits did that joke years ago. The point is more valid now than ever, though. “Where did I put my phone” or “can you call my phone?” is a phrase I hear every day, I think.
Go to my parents’ house. They still have a wall phone in the downstairs kitchen. It has a dial. For something with heavily used moving parts, it outlasted 1000 cell phones or more, and it looks like new. They also have an antique, chrome pay phone on the game room wall. I don’t remember if it’s dial or touch tone.
In our rec room, we have a working Automatic Electric model 50 phone (manufactured 1937-1956) that we recovered from my father-in-law’s house when he passed away. A lot of people who visit us make a phone call with it because they think it is so cool to use an old rotary dial phone!
Ah for the good ol’ days of the rural party line. Our ring was two longs and a short. Wall mounted box with a hand crank and the earpiece hanging on the side. Operator knew everybody by name (including all the kids) and news spread faster than even the internet today.
I live in Southern California and, so far, we’ve had more days this year where the high temp. is under 70 than days above. That’s REALLY weird for a place that only has two seasons: Summer & February. We normally average about 4 inches of rain a year and, so far this year, we’ve doubled that.
Our phones are not only attached to the wall, but able to be thrown across the room or dropped without breaking.
Our home phones confound most phone company techs who see them.
We have 2 phone lines and a collection of old “ma bell” business phones, with phones in 5 places in the house. 3 of the phones are digital 2 line phones and 2 are 2 line rotary phones.
I am here in Washington, NC (the original Washington-1776) it was a wonderful morning and turned into a comfortable day with the high being in the low to mid 60’s.
The oldest Washington is Washington VA. (Rappahanock Co VA) The town was laid out and surveyed by George Washington in 1749 when he was working for Thomas, Lord Fairfax.

But it’s still funny. I like retro jokes, but then I am old enough to be retro.
Isn’t a beautiful morning here in good ole NC! Good morning Carolina Girls!

@pamlicorat– It’s partly cloudy here about 45 minutes out of Charlotte.
@rise22— You are an early riser. Besides, I’ve been to Oregon, summer, winter, mostly similar.

Cellular access for miscreant youth will be the fodder of books describing America’s inevitable downfall.

Same here. I refuse to own a cell phone. My land line works just fine.
