One who has never programmed, and especially in a language with such low a user-friendly-rating as she employed, cannot possibly imagine the epic proportions of the effort expended in this task.I imagine there is an even larger stack of referential notes somewhere that outline each portion of the code and explain its purpose and calling conventions, required arguments, etc..You can download the Apollo mission code.It is all Public Domain.
“1201 Alarm. 1202 Alarm.” Armstrong and Aldrin had doubts about the LEM’s reliability. In case they had to abort during the landing phase, they kept the rendezvous radar active, so they could save time and fuel as they returned to the CSM in lunar orbit. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but it overloaded the computer. Fortunately Margaret Hamilton’s software (along with everyone else who worked on it) was designed to know when it was overloaded, and to give priorities to the different functions it was asked to do.
I think that stack of paper includes the software for the LEM and the Command Module computer, and the Instrument Unit (IU) atop the S-IVB stage in the Saturn boosters, and the documentation. The Command Module had its own navigation computer and optics, and if needed could fly to the moon and back on its own. (This was a Cold War thing; it seemed possible that the Soviets might interfere with communications between Apollo and the ground.)
@Randy_BThe third Margaret Hamilton on Wikipedia writes books for children and manages a small publishing empire. I find that deliciously circumstantial.
That rabbit is using a modular object language. That can hardly be considered real programming.Hamilton, (master of “The Cruising Vessel” and played by Judge Reinhold in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. All right, Hamilton!) didn’t have a high level language with which to work, because none existed at that time. The AGC code was written in AGC assembly language.
There’s more (than you want to know, probably) about the operation of Apollo computers here: http://history.nasa.gov/afj/compessay.htm
I love “Verb 99.” Please enable engine ignition? Well, that’s one time you wouldn’t want the computer to have hurt feelings. Just imagine where Dave Bowman would have been if he’d said “HAL, open the pod bay doors, please.”
I once had a picture of the Wicked Witch of the West signed by that Margaret Hamilton – addressed personally to me, courtesy of my father who was an actor. Some turdcasket cub scout stole it from my files during a Webelos den meeting back in the late 80s. I deeply regret the loss.

They mentioned Gertrude Bell. Among other things, she supplied Lawrence of Arabia with a lot of the information he needed to plan his combat operations. There’s a new movie about her, “Queen of the Desert,” by Werner Herzog and starring Nicole Kidman. Some day it may appear in the US.

This one is still alive and running a business (with a lousy website).

Hah, hah, LOL, you people think the Apollo missions were real and we went to the moon. SUCKERS.
“Margaret Hamilton” was portrayed by off-off-Broadway character actor Mildred Polybottom.

My Goddard friends will swear for the truthiness of this image, or not, but the code will live forever (which is how long its execution takes)….

Circumstantial as evidence to her complicity in the rise of the automatons that will crush mankind as inferior and illogical, that is.

That’s nothing. I have a stack of excuses twice that high for not accomplishing anything notable in my lifetime.

Ms. Hamilton does look like one sharp cookie. Which raises the idle question, can cookies really be sharp?

I bet there were lots of “GO-TOs” in that pile. Would hate to have to debug it. This woman deserves a Nobel Prize.
