None of my many hunting friends have assault rifles…..The only reason to have one is if you are super paranoid, and you feel the need to protect yourself from your own government, by shooting people who work for it… Which consists of your neighbors by the way….Please don’t confuse hunters with the jerks who desire automatic assault rifles….Sure they’re cool. But why is it only the nut cases that buy them?. And what are they looking to shoot at 100+ rounds a minute? Your neighbors….

If you’re referring to an AR-15 style 5.56X45 round, it is illegal for most of that game because it is too low powered, making it too likely to injure rather than produce a clean kill.

Bilan, I support in no uncertain terms that we have the right to have guns…But there are some people out there that get a little too carried away, and get somewhat confused about why they actually have them…Burglars? Government agents? Neighborhood kids? …OK, that last one I agree with…And yes, guns are really fun to shoot..

When someone is shown as displaying a bunch of ragged remains of flesh, going so far as to just identify some of the with labels like “something with fur”, the point of the cartoon is not " guns are bad" or even “assault rifle-using sportsmen are bad”. The point of the cartoon is “you are no kind of sportsman”.-The hunter who is in it for trophies alone (rather than for food and maybe an occasional trophy) would want to spend a fortune on taxidermy…

Hunters don’t need assault rifles, but hunting is not the only reason to own a weapon. So arguing against assault weapons by saying hunters don’t need them presents a false dichotomy. But I would question the mental qualifications of a “pro-gunner” that falls into that debate trap. Maybe they shouldn’t have one.

I have seen people fire assault rifles at inanimate objects for fun, some collect them, a small few might be considered paranoid, but I don’t remember any sportsman using them. It would ruin the meat, tear up the hide, and destroy any trophy. Many people obsessively play video games where they use assault weapons to kill people and destroy things in mass, but if someone picks up an actual gun and shoots some cans he/she is a crazy person. I don’t consider myself a gun person, but I have heard many people go off the deep end.

Should anyone really be allowed to own (or even just use) something that dangerous just because it’s fun to shoot things? Blowing things up can be fun too, but keeping bombs for recreational purposes is generally not allowed.

As usual the typical anti-gun misconception. There is no such thing as as an assault gun, merely the furniture. The round used in an M1A is the same one used in a five round Remington700. But then, that doesn’t matter to the “Gun Bad” crowd.

My theory of why more guys (and yes, it’s almost always men buying these things) are getting things like AR-15s and somtimes converting them over to full auto operation (and yes, they do these things; I read plenty of stuff online from people who’ve done this): it’s the fault of the car industry, for making cars we can’t work on (or in some cases even understand) ourselves. I think part of being a guy is to have a certain fascination with powerful machinery, and to believe that one is master of such things. Used to be you could satisfy this urge by hot-rodding your car, but nowadays it’s both mostly illegal (no “tampering” with the smog equipment) and largely impossible (it’s all controlled by proprietary software). When cars started becoming impossible for the owner to maintain or modify, a lot of guys switched over to motorcycles (the big boom in Harleys, back in the ‘90s, seems to coincide with this), but now they’re also pretty much all closed-up digital stuff, just like the cars (to add rear speakers to the radio on a new Harley, you must pay the dealership to do a software update; don’t even ask about altering how the engine works). What’s left is guns, which are powerful, reasonably complex, but also designed to be serviced by their owners. Only trouble is, “I want a powerful, complex gadget that I can still understand, take apart and put back together” isn’t a socially-acceptable excuse, so we have to make up stuff like “I need it to protect my family” (from what…? despite the sensational media, actual violent crime has been in steady decline in this country for a quarter-century)… and in time, people start to take the excuse seriously.

Assault is a behavior, not a rifle.

No automatic rifles are sold without special licensing and investigations taking up to a year. Automatic weapons are very rare in civilian hands.

The weapons referred to as “assault rifles” are semi-automatic and require a trigger pull for each round fired.

They are good for target practice, coyotes and small critters.

Rifles account for 3% of murders in the US.

The most common murder weapon is a .22 caliber handgun.

You guys are hysterical and prove that you, though your ignorance, are the truly dangerous ones. The military look-alikes that you guys call ‘Assault Rifles’ (a term coined by Adolf Hitler concerning a weapon firing a cartridge on full automatic, as well as automatic, and of intermediate size between a pistol and a rifle) such as the AR15 fire a .22 caliber sized projectile (.223) which drills TINY pencil-diameter holes in what it hits. Now, if you used a 12 gauge shotgun with 00 buckshot or Slugs, THEN you’d get the effect you so ignorantly refer to. The proof of how LESS LETHAL an AR15 is over a 9mm let’s say ‘Glock’, is someone like Seung-Hui Cho, who used 9mm Glock and a Walther .22 caliber handguns to murder 31 innocent people, none of which had a magazine over 10 rounds in capacity. The other butchering psycho, Adam Lanza, had to shoot the poor little munchkins several times each to kill them with his AR15. Cho accomplished his butchery with a single shot in most cases.

These mass shooters are very similar to you guys. They weren’t gun owners. They murdered, stole, or had someone else buy their weapons at the last minute so they could slaughter people, and at the same time they were making their infamous ‘mark’ on history, they were contributing to the gun control argument. The only one in memory is the psycho in North Carolina, who was an actual gun owner, but he was an ATHEIST LEFT WINGER who hated all religions.

Prove me wrong and publish this. Knowing your tendency to censor “1984” style any opposing viewpoint, I’ll be very surprised if you do.

Britons like to sing “Britons never, never, never shall be slaves” but in fact they are. Americans don’t sing and we mean it when we tell you you’ll never disarm over 135 million gun owners over the murder and mayhem committed by a few of your fellow deluded Left Wingers. “The most effectual way to enslave The People is to disarm them” Sam Adams, Founder.

It too bad that an editorial is made about a subject that Wiley has no knowledge about. As do most of the submitted comments. In summary, no ethical hunter (of which that are millions) would hunt any large game with this type of rifle. Wiley insinuation of this is based on ignorance. He really needs to research his subject before he draws cartoons that are totally false. Also, these rifles are semi auto, which means that you must pull the trigger for each shot taken not the fully automatic (just hold the trigger down)designed for the military. Lastly, predominately these accurate rifles are owned and used for target shooting and hunting small game. I know the purpose of this cartoon is to cause controversy and dialog. However, knowing that most people who watch the news do not question its authenticity ( i.e. Brian Williams -NBC), also would not question this misrepresentation of hunters or the shooting industry. You do need to ask yourself, why doesn’t Wiley write about the legalization of marijuana. Or the deadly affects of alcohol? Or the lack of respect for life in America? Or abortion. Or maybe the golden grail -the religion of terrorism? I bet that these are all items are just too hot for him to write about successfully without causing much discomfort to the writer or reader. No, he chooses a subject that he knows will draw a knee jerk response for most readers -as proven by some of the ignorant responses below -and that he has bias about alreadyFinally, I know that this response/ comment will be like casting the" pearls in front of the swine" but hopefully some of you will actually research these persons and groups that are law abiding citizens that have families or careers in the firearm industry (or related industries) and make an educated decision about firearms based on facts not a ignorant cartoon interpretation.

First, stop identifying modern sporting rifles with "assault " rifles. NO ONE in US can own an assault rifle unless they one of the very few that possess an NFA license. The only difference between a modern sporting rifle and a traditional rifle is the shape of the stock. Hunters that use the modern sporting rifle style do so because of ergonomics. Please, educate yourselves on the subject before you post

So many mistakes, so little time…for starters, civilian AR15s are NOT assault rifles. Only military, select-fire rifles qualify for that term. AR-type rifles are very popular for hunting wild hogs in the south, for hunting coyotes and other varmints in the west—-the list goes on. Be aware, as some seem to not be, the the right to keep and bear has nothing to do with hunting. As for need…did Rosa Parks “need” to sit in the front of the bus? It’s not a question of need. It’s a constitutionally guaranteed civil right, whether you like it or not.

    1. The term “Assault Rifle” is a figment of the anti-gun activists searching for a catchy handle for their phobia, Go to any gun store and ask for one and you will get a blank stare (or a laugh).

    2. What hoplophobes call an assault rifle is any gun that looks like a rifle the military might use. Even the infamous “assault weapons ban” of 1994 (which achieved nothing according to the ATF) could only do it by specifically listing certain weapons by name.

    3. No military in the world will issue what hoplophobes call assault weapons to their troops. Why? They want fully automatic weapons that fire multiple rounds with one pull of the trigger. Such weapons have been illegal in the US since 1934 (except by federally licensed individuals – expensive and not easily acquired).

4, Civilian weapons are “semi-”automatic only. One trigger pull – one bullet. Period. Just because an civilian AR-15 looks like a military M-16 does NOT make it an assault rifle except in the minds of those too ignorant to know the difference (or care).

Yes, just a comic strip. Unfortunately way too many people get their “information” from newspapers, including “comics”. We had a letter to the editor locally some weeks ago that said self-defense shootings don’t happen because they would all be printed in the local paper if they did. A rebuttal listing sixteen such events in the previous months from news outlets across America was not deemed worthy of being printed, however. That person blissfully believes she is right. And she will look at that “comic” as reinforcement of her beliefs.Comics are supposed to be “funny”. I did not see anything funny about this one. Of course, I don’t find much funny about so-called “political cartoons” that lampoon people (usually politicians) for their beliefs either. Regardless of your leanings I think most of them are just plain mean-spirited. And we wonder why our society has become so violent and polarized.

The vast majority of “assault rifles” in the US are not full-auto or burst-fire. In order to own a full-auto or burst-fire weapon in the US you have to buy an expensive federal permit (around $300 from what I’ve heard) and register the weapon with the US government. Only a tiny minority of gun owners in the US want to pay that kind of money, much less register with the gubmint.“Assault rifles” are almost always semi-auto, i.e., one bullet per trigger pull. And there is no legal definition of “assault rifle” anyway; it’s just jargon for “weapon that looks scary to gun-haters.”

I just LOVE reading all the ignorant comments about’assault’ rifles. The term is a made-up one by the paranoids who hate ANY firearms and think demonizing it will make it go away. Like anything, firearms can be used for good, evil and many things in between. Mention firearms and the know-nothings crawl out of the woodwork and spout off BS they’ve heard other ignorant people say. Maybe if they actually made an effort to find out the truth instead of just being a lemming? Try ignoring the rantings on both the extreme right and extreme left to start with then perform due diligence and research. BTW, contrary to some statements made on here MSR’s(Modern Sporting Rifles) ARE legal for certain types of game depending on where you’re located, they’re used for target shooting events with prizes in the thousands of dollars and can be ideal for home protect when properly equipted/used to mention just a few uses. Incidentally, I could say much the same about the computers some of you may be using….like why do you need all that much RAM when 64K was good enough for others, why do you think you need a cable or DSL hookup when dial-up works just fine…… Or why do you NEED the fancy tires/wheels/heated leather seats/a satellite radio(when AM radio works just fine) or more than 100 HP in that new Lexus(BTW, why DO you need a new car…….?).

In point of fact your typical North American Game hunting rifle in 7mm Mag does SIGNIFICANTLY more tissue damage than even a battle rifle cambered in 7.62 NATO.
