Probably for the same reason he didn’t want Quill to ‘get the wrong idea’ . Either he really likes Tiffany and doesn’t want the fact that he has feelings to get around… or he likes Tiffany and doesn’t want anyone to know that he likes Tiffany. Or that he likes Tiffany …..

Great facial expressions caught in a few cartoon lines on Tiffany. First panel, needled at Gunther’s rudeness, but not about to let on. Second, genuinely touched by Gunther’s Mom’s mothering (when was the last time anybody mothered her?) Third, very vulnerable, trying to stay armored with a smile, but those aren’t her usual insolent eyes.

Gunther has had a quiet summer? I would have thought he would be in summer school, to make up some of the courses he missed by skipping the first semester at Moony. If not, then doesn’t he have a job? Even Tiffany does that.

First of all, Gunther is being just plain rude with his mother. This is disturbing, but not surprising since he’s been this way since he returned from Peru. What has gotten into him?

    -

Second of all, there’s no way that Tiffany is missing anything except Gunther’s companionship. If something had happened in her room then they would have started a relationship. There’s no way that Gunther or Tiff for that matter would just leave it at a one night stand.

It seems that Gunther may have embarrassed himself in the time he spend in Tiffany’s dorm room, which is why he has refused to talk about it with Quill. Tiffany came over to let him know all is well, but he’s still upset about the whole thing.

Not only doe Gunther take Tiffany’s hand, but he does it assertively, and he obviously is tired of being smothered by his mom. Tiffany’s expression? Interesting. Somehow I think she is not trying to manipulate the situation, maybe Gunther’s assertiveness is very attractive to her. Given her father gives her everything, but she feels he is estranged from her, maybe an assertive Gunther is just what she needs. Who knows? Very interesting I know I repeat. By the way I think the sentiment that hopes that Gunther will somehow get involved with Luann, and there is still a pining there, when there never was one, has, as the saying goes “that ship has sailed.” This is far more interesting (I know the third time I said interesting, oops, 4th time).

Neither Gunther nor Tiffany has ever had intercourse. She is, then, not pregnant, not “late,” not missing a period. She is interested in visiting her study-buddy.Gunther’s behavior is more charged, and so more interesting. He is still filled with self-loathing, channeled towards his loving (and smothering) Mom. He acts out impulsively, not even conscious that he is taking Tiffany by the hand and asserting dominance. This could with time bud into an interesting romantic passage….

I believe that both Gunther and Mrs. B have some Mommy issues.

Despite trying to get clear of her son’s interest, she does want to know what he is into and with whom.

Gunther is just plain jealous that he is not the only man in his mother’s life regarding her mom’s boyfriend but in this specific case that is not the problem.

He is not being rude, but he does want to have privacy. He is still awkward with whatever happened or did not happen with Tiff in her room. Understandably so, he does not want to talk about it with anybody, which is why he yelled at Quill. And he does not want to talk about that specifically with his mother. And knowing his mother, he does not want her trying to coax anything from Tiff regarding their relationship, even if it is only a friendship.

Thank you, Night-Gaunt49. I’m tired of most coming down on Gunther when he tries to get his mother to see that he is a college age adult, not someone who has to do everything for him. They complain about Gunther’s attitude and snappiness, but how would they have responded if their mother baby talked to them when they were 19 years old?

Gunther is irritated that his mother wants to know what he’s doing – and with whom. Quite natural attitude for a fellow of his age and experience (or lack thereof). So he takes charge and hustles her off to a more secluded spot. She seems impressed with his dominance which she reads as confidence and a little “bad boy” in nature. Some say that many girls kind of like this. I think Tiffany is one of these.

I’m sorry, but I grew up in my parent’s house. Yeah, I did chores and so on, but I didn’t pay the mortgage, I didn’t repair stuff when it broke (or, after our dad died, I didn’t hire and pay the handyman who helped our mom with broken stairs and such.)

When I started working part time while going to college, I started buying my own food. (I would have paid rent, but my mother didn’t want me to take another college loan.)

Besides the ‘tude that Gunther is showing his mother, his reaction to Tiffany showing up wasn’t so great, either. She should have called in advance, sure, but a visit from a friend (?) or a study buddy, or what, even if unexpected, doesn’t need that kind of reaction.

    Gunther continues to disappoint…

What has happened to our shy, bumbling Gunther? He’s becoming a testy, rude, grouch. Did Rosa actually destroy him? Did he and Tiffany get carried away, have a one night stand, and now he’s feeling guilty, or even worse, worried? Wouldn’t it be ironic if Tiff becomes the sympathetic, likable person in all this? I think that they would make an interesting couple, but I fear that Gunther will cave in and return to Peru to be with Rosa.

“In real life”, I am a pretty private person. Only info that is necessary or germane to the subject at hand, or whatever is appropriate for the “level of clearance” (i.e.,strangers, acquaintances, friends, close friends, family), so to speak, for that particular person (the “need to know” basis sort of thing). However, when people genuinely inquire about my welfare and happiness, I will respond with willing and delightful happiness! It’s all part of the human experience. When done in balance, people can get to know one another, without too much drama, and such. – However, if one seems to look around constantly, and keeps “searching” me while asking me a series of questions, then I’ll know that it’s just “prying” and will proceed to not provide them with any details. – It’s almost sort of like an electrical logic circuit, or a flow chart. Given the right conditions, two or more people can show genuine interest in others, and even get to know one another better. But do something to undermine/erode any level of trust, and the whole thing is changed. That’s pretty much where Gunther is with his mom. He is trying to become more aware, more confident, more willing to live life, instead of being “overly careful” (as Rosa was trying to point out to him in the past), however, he doesn’t want to “lay his cards on the table” for his mother to know what’s going on with him. It’s as simple as that. It’s why he said: "Where it’s less ‘mother-y’ . Granted, one does wish to enjoy a measure of privacy. However, it seems in Gunther’s case, he really does like Tiffany, and he has all these other experiences, but really doesn’t know how to “let his guard down”, even with his own mother. He isn’t just wishing to “avoid prying”, he is really more so just still trying to get to that next level of confidence (the one that would also even help him to see how it’s okay for his mother to have another guy in her life!)….

Here’s a slightly different way of looking at this. In the first frame, Gunther could have just said ‘Hello, Tiffany’, instead of asking what she was doing at his house (not exactly the kind of welcome that shows a guy is interested in a gal, to my way of thinking.)

Then, in answer to him mother’s statement that she would make them all some tea and they could talk, he would just say ‘Thanks, anyway, Mom, but Tiff and I have some study plans and she just came to get me’. (And since Tiff does have her own car, and, as we know, Gunther doesn’t have a car, this is logical.)

The final frame could show Gunther pulling Tiff by the hand out to her car.

Then, (SPOILER ALERT), Tiff explains what she’s doing there. No, really, she does. Even though Gunther doesn’t seem to believe it for a second…
