our schools have been starting since Aug. 6. All the districts will have started by next week.

They USED to. My nieces are already back at college. What in Hell happened in 30 years?! Two things that always happened right before school were 1) Labor Day and 2) Jerry Lewis.

Here in Latvia, Labor Day is called The Day of Knowledge and all schools ALWAYS start on that day (well maybe unless it is Sunday, in which case, it starts next day). That day there are no lessons, just the festive gathering for the first school day, bringing flowers to teachers, getting schedules, eating a cake, and then back home.
