Advice to Bernice as an R.A.:-Make sure that all the students who are supposed to be living in the dorm really are living there. If they aren’t living there, find out whether they have moved off campus or have gone following a spirit guide and will come back in the spring semester.-If any student keeps a pet in the dorm which violates the university’s dorm rules, tell them that they need to make other arrangements. If they say that the pet belongs to someone else, tell them to return the pet to the other person. This goes double if it’s not even legal to keep that kind of animal as a pet in the state.-Hold a meeting for all residents of the dorm, and tell them that if anyone tries to exploit their good nature by making them spend a lot of time taking messages for them, or having to store things for them, they have the right to decline.

How could Dez fit all of that into one summer doing work-trade on slow tramp steamers, the way kids her age usually get around the world? If she’s going by plane, who’s footing the bill?
Dreamdeer over 9 years ago
Hmmm…Unless she’s got a parent working for an airline.

I like Bernice’s self assurance and security in herself! I still want to see her team up with Tiffany again, I think they are very entertaining together.

Strange, she didn’t come to my shared room in Milano; I have very good tea for her.

Whatever happened to Delta? We pretty much know what all the other characters are up to. But Delta has fallen off the map!

Pretty rich for a hippy girl. But the assortment of destinations reveals Evans’ lack of knowledge of those locations.

Greg, did you know that “merveilleux” is also a small Belgium pastry? When I first Googled Dez’s description I thought you were trying to pull our legs!

Although isn’t it odd that Dez’ words to describe her travels are French, German and Dutch but her travels were to India, Israel and Italy? Dez definitely was on the “I” itinerary!

7After the excitement of Mr. Gray talking on Saturday, I am a little disappointed that that arc is back on temporary hiatus for a while. However, I AM glad Dez and Bernice are being featured this week!I am also glad to see that the two of them are “roomies” again this year, and I hope we see more of their college friends as well! With Bernice being an RA now, we should likely see her interacting with a very LARGE assortment of new people! This was a very good move for her character.

I got lost. Did I miss something? I guess there was a summer break burried in here back somewhere. Oh well, its gonna be a short week with the Labor Day Holiday. Wait! That’s next week. No matter, all weeks are the same when you’re retired! Anyway, have a fantastic week all.

Being an R.A. will be great— for Bern, it will likely get her free room & board and look good on her resume; for us, it will get us into the lives of all the other women on the floor.

I recommend Calvin and Hobbes strips today; an insightful commentary on greed.

“How’s that for blowing the needle off the old Excite-O-Meter?” Well, it beats another week of trying to rebuild a warehouse with about 10% of the necessary funding. But does this “R.A.” story thread mean that we will once again have to put up with Piero (sp.?), Hair, Sun, Viper, and the other students in Bernice’s dorm? None of those characters seemed to stick, and they were effectively dropped from the strip long ago. Maybe this year they have all moved out of the dorm, and it will be a new crew of students whom future guidance counselor Bernice will oversee?

If Bernice is now starting her second year at Moony Uni, presumably Luann will be starting her second year at Pitt Community College. Since that’s a 2-year school, will she graduate next spring? Or will the cast stay in their second year of college for the next 5 or 6 years?

I sure hope something comes along to blow the needle off the excite-o-meter for Bern. Maybe that’s a leading comment. I guess we are left with a cliff hanger regarding Mr Gray.

Thanks Gweedo, but it would seem that my comment, as well as my name just disappeared, and it wasn’t even raunchy.

> Bernice and Dez appear to still be roommates in the same dorm room…surely they would have left their freshman dorm for the new year.>I was in the same dorm all the way through college. Moony probably works that way, for Bernice to be an RA now. As for their still being roommates for more than one year, that’s possible too (although not necessary). And doesn’t Tiffany have a suite?

From what I’ve observed of second and third generation hippies, they share the same values as their parents and grandparents, just differently expressed: disregard for convention, strong emphasis on creativity, a desire to create an alternative society, love of nature, hand-made things, beauty, humanity, exotic things, ritual, and fun, and especially love of love. They believe in sharing, both in material goods and activities, and don’t make hard distinctions between work and play.
They often don’t look like their parents/grandparents because that would mean establishing a new convention. They protest different issues because the world’s issues have changed. They’re less likely to use drugs, because the drug revolution was a temporary act of desperation, to try and overcome the imagination-stifling upbringings standard in the 1950’s. They’re more likely to get pierced and tattoo’d than their elders, and to dye their hair creative colors—but they have the same ethic of not trying to fit themselves into an employee-look, but instead either starting their own businesses or working for somebody who doesn’t care how they look. And like their forebears, they make their own things or decorate/improve the ones store-bought, grow a lot of their own food, and don’t need much cash.
Another big difference is visibility. They don’t seek attention the way their forebears did, because their forebears grew up and taught them not to. Sure, they look different from the mainstream, but their attitude is more “So what?” than “Look at me!” This is because the hippies did exactly what they said they would: they dropped out. They bought land back when you could still do that, set things up their own way, created their own mini-economy, and raised their kids in it. There’s a lot more hippies around—old and young—than most people realize, because they aren’t big consumers and therefore off the corporate radar.
Judging from some of the reactions to this cartoon-series, towards anyone unconventional, they have good reason to stay hidden!

I can’t help but feel that the ‘excite-o-meter’ for Bernice is really a very different measuring instrument than the one that Dez has. I meant that in the nicest way, but I’m just kind of amazed that two such different kids can live together. One is a ‘by the rules’ type, the other is ‘rules? what’s that’?
Airman over 9 years ago
Poor Gunther, his excite-o-meter just doesn’t have a chance to work.

I have a new question. When I was in college mumble years ago, RA stood for “Resident Advisor” … when did the A begin to stand for “Assistant”, and assistant to who?
seismic-2 Premium Member over 9 years ago
When I was in college, the RA was a “resident associate”, and he was a grad student (who had to put up with a dorm full of undergrads, for free room and board and a salary). Each alleyway of rooms also had an “Upperclass Council” member, who was a junior or a senior and whose main job was to enforce the rules and keep the noise to an acceptable din.

Folks — don’t be gullible. Dez can SEE all of those via the internet, and she can help the earthquake victims in Nepal by donating online or making a donation website to help them…
