I think that’s not how the R.A. works, Tiff.

Y’know…it _almost seems like around this same time, last year, we were “here”. Of course, “Ol’ Starhead” was laid out on the floor, and “Miss Anytime, Anyplace” was out and about, leaving Bernice to do all those favors…and talks of “throwing parties” bandied about…..and Tiffany was making all those expressive faces then, too…. – Wonder if that manual has anything covering any of that stuff from last year? Don’t think “Ol’ Tammy Textbook” (Bernice) would want to feel like a “shady lady”… – Actually, Tiff, you might want to rethink that “order”. They may only have a deep mauve paisley pattern left…either that, or the plaid ones they just pulled up, two buildings down the way….

I’m afraid Tiffany is clueless beyond redemption.

So much for all the new maturity for both Tiffany and Bernice. Unless turning into her former high school counselor is counted as ‘maturity’ for Bernice…

How is Tiffany planning to have “epic” parties? She barely knows anyone at Moony U. except for her high school classmates. She even admitted to Gunther that she was lonely and didn’t have any friends in the August 7 strip.-Maybe she’s just putting on a facade, but Bernice knows her better than almost anyone else at Moony, so it’s not like Tiffany can fool her.
JayBluE about 9 years ago
“Perhaps that is why she wants to get rid of the gray. Gunther apparently does not like gray. His mom likes gray, though…”^Apparently, those “MP4s” he shared with her worked….. too well… – Either that, or she can’t get his “constant obsession” with all things grey out of her mind….

If The biggest problem Bernice has all year is a few parties RA should be a smooth gig.

Robin Williams was suffering from a serious mental illness (clinical depression) that involves imbalances of brain chemistry, to the extent that the sufferer really cannot see an end to misery. It’s not about loneliness.
Nope, I’m no shrink, but I was a volunteer on a crisis switchboard and we were woefully undertrained to deal with this…

Bernice is one of the few people that actually has conversations with Tiffany, and vice versa. No, they don’t have a “besties” relationship, at all. But Tiffany isn’t meaning any harm, here- it’s just her… “being Tiffany”. It’s like Knute said, last week (paraphrasing): It’s hard to use certain words with Tiffany, since Tiffany doesn’t understand them"…. in this case, one of those words would probably be “adhere”. The other, probably “policy”. And maybe throw in “broke” (both the “infraction” kind, and the “lack of funds” kind)…
Airman about 9 years ago
No, Tiffany, no. You’re regressing. You need Gunther to come back and share another “moment” with you. Get real (ironic thing to tell a cartoon) , build a true relationship with someone. You and Gunther could be good for each other, if only for a little while. Go out, hang out, make out. See if Gunther’s excite-o-meter can get jump started.

Had a great RA our freshman year. If things were loud, he’d knock on the door and have his hand over his eyes when you answered, so he could honesty reply he didn’t see anything.

I thought RAs get their own room. At least they did when I went to college. But then, that wouldn’t lend itself to a decent storyline, now, would it?
dre7861 about 9 years ago
Bernice will be instituting the Brown Shirts (ie, Hall Monitors). She will make these dorms run on time…or else!
gromit82 about 9 years ago
I wonder if Greg is indeed going to do a story or stories about Bernice enforcing dorm rules against her fellow students. Last year, when there was a loud party in Bernice’s room, no RA showed up to tell them to turn the music down, much less shut down the party. I don’t remember seeing an RA in Bernice’s dorm all year.
Sisyphos about 9 years ago
I doubt if colleges (including Moony U.) supply carpeting for dorm rooms, Tiff. You’ll have to get Daddy to shell out for new rugs, I suspect. And Bernice should sit down with you and explain clearly her RA duties, especially in regard to large and/or noisy parties…,.
Pipe Tobacco Premium Member about 9 years ago
8I enjoy these arcs in the dorm very much! I like (even if it is meant to be annoying to Bernice) Tiffany’s “blah-blah” expression. It is funny! As I stated to Airman above, I do not think Tiffany reverting back to “form” so-to-speak negates the growth she has been displaying. I think she is just not ready to show more growth with Bernice.

She’s an RA? How absurd.

I see they’ve completely given up on making Tiffany more interesting or relatable. It was too difficult for them I guess, they want it easy and blah.

Bernice is becoming a cranky fussbudget who takes herself and this R.A. job way too seriously. I hope Tiffany continues to give her grief about it all year.
luann1212 about 9 years ago
I mean party girl in the sense that she would rather party than study. She really is a troubled character, maybe the most troubled one of our cast of characters, other than Gunther. Could that be why they are attracted to each other? I agree with your second paragraph, although my experience with this toon tells me that Greg knows exactly where he is going with her. We just don’t, which is part of the fun.
luann1212 about 9 years ago
General comment and then I really must get back to work!!! This blog is so revealing, particularly with Tiffany being the protagonist. If we really dislike authority we like that she is giving old square Bernice a hard time, while if we want Tiffany to evolve into a mature appreciation of the world, we think that Bernice is trying to work with a recalcitrant Tiffany. We could do that with Gunther and Tiffany as well. We all love Luann, although some people think she is a goof, I don’t, but our reaction to our cast of characters I think is very revealing. Hmmmm!!!

If Tiffany’s dad is so well set financially, why is she living in a dorm? Looking back at my own college days, instead of paying rent, those parent’s with the financial wherewithal bought a house or condo for the kid to live in and then sold it at a profit after graduation.

Good and proper use of “ensure” in panel two. Most people still confuse it with “insure.”
rdv63 about 9 years ago
So Bernice takes a position that will allow her to serve and help those who need it, and gets ignored. And this is how a formally idealistic high school student transforms into an old distant, uncaring high school counselor!

I want to think that behind door number X will be someone who will sweep Bern off her feet. Maybe it will be Hair; she danced with Hair at the party in her room last year. Let’s see… we have a few days to go and therefore a few more doors for Bern to knock on.
Pipe Tobacco Premium Member about 9 years ago
Implausible…. I do not think having Tiffany go a bit “back-and-forth” in terms of her character development is unrealistic. I think she is and will still continue to grow… especially when interacting with some characters, but may remain “Tiffany Original” for a while (even perhaps quite a while) with others. I know people that are like that… and in fact, perhaps most of us are like that to a degree…. I know I tend to regress a bit into a different behavior pattern when I occasionally get to “hang out” with old college buddies and high school friends than I do in typical day-to-day life with my family or at my university.
Pipe Tobacco Premium Member about 9 years ago
I like your idea of thinking that Tiffany is “taunting” (your word…. I would probably have said “teasing”) Bernice by making over-the-top requests….. just to get Bernice’s goat. :)
doverdan about 9 years ago
Evans continues to play up Tiffany as the popular girl trope, yet he shows her as friendless. He needs to make up his mind on what he wants Tiffany to be, you can’t have it both ways. ………….-—————————————————Plot development is not nearly as good as it used to be. Gregg is not to blame..Miss Evans allows no gradual change. So people often jerk about..Rosa changed from smart and gifted to fuzzy and weird. And back and forth..Gunther changed from kind and generous to fitful and obnoxious. And back again.
Luann changes from clueless to clever. And back again..Tiff changed from snotty and obnoxious to needful. And back again. ,Only Quill seems forever the same — since Miss Evens lovingly rescued him from his volcano.
lmonteros about 9 years ago
Lordy, Bernice needs to get some spine. She let Des’ friends tromp all over her, and now she’s an RA?
doverdan about 9 years ago
I believe that much of the plotting here still comes from Gregg — and that may be what rescues the strip for us, from time to time..But the jumping about between story-lines, the sudden abandonment of some without any hint of resolution, and the inconsistencies of character motivation are not at all like what we were accustomed to seeing some years back.
Pipe Tobacco Premium Member about 9 years ago
Implausible…. I am not disagreeing with you because I agree with some of the ideas you state about Tiffany being isolated, perhaps lonely, etc. I still think, however, that what you quoted from me is also true:“I do not think having Tiffany go a bit “back-and-forth” in terms of her character development is unrealistic.”Regardless if Tiffany is isolated, lonely, etc. it is still very realistic for her to be more open to showing growth and development with some folks (i.e. Gunther), and reverting back to form with others (in my opinion, this is what she is doing with Bernice…. acting in a way that she thinks Bernice expects her to act)For me, the very best part about today’s comic is the expression on Tiffany’s face as she recites the “Blah-blah” comment to Bernice. It is classic, IMHO.

Typical RA/smartass resident conversation. At least when I was in college. I was the smartass.

When Bernice said she was the new Ra, I thought Dez had inducted her into some new-age worship of the classical Ægyptian gods.
RSH about 9 years ago
“…We know and they know that Tiffany has a rough life….”-————————————————————————————-
huh? please explain. I don’t think any character in this strip has a rough life. Like every other character (all adolescent in growth stages), Tiffany creates her own situations.
gromit82 about 9 years ago
What I hope we see tomorrow is Bernice introducing herself as the RA to some new students. After all, the RA position is primarily to assist first-year students.
RSH about 9 years ago
Living alone? She could have an assigned roommate if she wanted. No real friends? She could make some if she wasn’t so preoccupied with herself and attempts at glamorizing. Coming from $ and parents who don’t spend much time raising their kids doesn’t doom one to being friendless. Tiffany is not stupid. She acts the way she wants. A punching bag? She can throw a few punches herself.

Given her eagerness, last year, to throw a party when she kindly let Bernice sleep over as “Starhead” (Piro) was knocked out on the floor in Bern’s room, I’d say that Tiffany, today, is “Pavlov’s Dog”, and she just heard the word “party” followed by the word “opportunity”, when her friend Bernice showed up at the door…and all the words that Bernice took the time to form, “suddenly translated” into “Tiffany speak”, as soon as they reached Tiffany’s ears… – Either that, or she reacted the same way as the kid in the car commercial where he hears: “Blah, blah, blah…. Free ’Shrek DVD”!…Blah, blah…."
