Not just California. This year every state in the Northwest, the Southwest, and the Southeast, and half the states in the Midwest, have had major fires. Idaho was hit the hardest. It has been the worst fire-season in the history of the USA. About time Mr. Evans addressed it, considering he has firefighters in his comic.

It has passed a year for us, loyal readers, but in Luann’s continuity, who can tell how much time has passed? Maybe it has been two months, reasonable time to conduct an investigation.

What! No doughnut?!?! I thought all first responders required pastry for their meetings. (Rule for good attendance: 1 less doughnut than people you expect to be there.)

Remember it is a comic don’t need real life stuff that a crime has go be committed. Enough bad news in this world. Let the comics be fun.

Rather than returning to any of the many. many hanging arcs, it looks like we may be beginning a totally new one.

There are perhaps too many open story-lines. .Today’s strip may show the beginning of yet another..Of course, many story-lines (ones that we may think still open) will never be returned to. .Abandonment of an interesting plot idea in mid stream is a sign of flightiness on the part on any author.

Touché! That makes perfect sense to me. That comment piqued my interest, but I didn’t think about it too much because I was just skimming through the last few days’ comments really fast. You said it perfectly :)

How would you know that these particular fire fighters haven’t been trained to deal with wild fires (which is what is happening in the west right now; not just limited to forested areas. Drought has caused any vegetated area to become like tinder.)

In a state like California where wildfires are a common problem, it would be surprising if a particular city’s fire fighters didn’t get training in how to manage them.

I am still unpublished, but get promising responses to stories I submit. I also participate in writer’s groups with people who have been published, and I figure they know more about all this than I do.

While the basics of a story are supposed to involve a character facing some kind of conflict and that character’s response to it changes (or doesn’t change) the character, there is a also a basic type of story called ‘slice of life’. The New Yorker Magazine publishes a lot of these.

Personally, I don’t find ‘slice of life’ interesting, because I prefer character-driven stories with action. But there is a definite market for ‘slice of life’ , and what that type of story is, which is primarily descriptive.

One member of our writer’s group specializes in this, and she’s very good at it. Most of what she concentrates on are descriptions about natural areas. Even though there is ‘nothing happening’, i.e., no one pollutes the area or tries to dig it up and build a shopping mall, or what, the descriptions are amazing. You feel like you are seeing the place, smelling it, touching it.

So describing something can be done successfully without a conflict situation being involved.
