Brad: Those policy meetings are important, but what a drag. Toni: Being a fireman isn't all glam, huh? Brad: Last week we had lots of fender-benders and elderly assist calls, which is fine, but...it's not why I became a firefighter. Toni: Why did you? Brad: To meet a hot woman. Toni: Well, don't give up. Some of those elderly ladies are smokin.

Toni’s punch line not very funny in this context. Condescending or something…

I hear that some elderly ladies don’t have eyebrows that show through their hair.

Brad’s probably thinking: “Smokin’ what…cigarettes?” – I guess, to Brad, most of the calls in a day, are different kinds of people who need someone to help as they start filming their home videos for AFHV and YouTube…
dadoctah about 9 years ago
…and if they’re smokin’, there’s a pretty good chance they’ll doze off with a lit cigarette and need a fireman.

Luann is this close to turn into ‘9 Chickweed Lane’ in terms of slow pacing

These policy meetings are pretty boring.(And they remind me too much of my workdays….)
Gerry Lee about 9 years ago
Thought Toni meant “smokin’” as a slang for ’attractive’and a word play on Brad’s comment about ‘hot woman", didn’t think of cigarettes. Ah well.
imbaldeagle about 9 years ago
Are these smokin’ ladies, the ones with blue hair?
DeniDee about 9 years ago
Why does Toni always say “fireman”? At least Brad says “firefighter”, but you would think the WOMAN—who is also a firefighter—would be more clued in.

Shouldn’t You Two “Love Birds” be Firming up Wedding Plans???
shamino about 9 years ago
I assume Brad would love to go out with someone who is “smokin’ in bed”, but as a firefighter, he’s only going to meet those of the wrong entendre.

Toni & Brad are very comfortable with each other…….the sexual tension is gone.

3Sadly, to me, today’s effort is not much better than the cat jokes. I still think I am just not “into” the wedding banter…. and yes, I realize that thus far there has been NO wedding banter. But, I guess it just feels like it is going to be the topic that all of this meandering will eventually lead to this week.In thinking back upon Brad and Toni as characters…. I think I get the most fun from them when they are interacting with Shannon. In terms of the second most fun…. well, I guess that would be in the arcs with Brad and Toni interacting with TJ. In terms of the most enjoyable serious arcs…. I found the Brad and Toni and Dirk arc very, very well done. The wedding arc…." meh." And, now I am thinking… perhaps why I have found the last few days so…. so…. “meh”… it might be because all the predictions of Brad and Toni getting married at the Firehouse and having their reception at the warehouse have me disliking both the firehouse and the warehouse when they come up in the story…. because I get fairly annoyed about wedding hoopla for the reasons I mentioned two days ago in the comments.

Brad I’d start taking notes; a woman has a thousand little ways, long before the “dear Brad” letter (okay text) of telling you that you aren’t making the grade
doverdan about 9 years ago
Implausible said, Brad and Toni can’t get married until the warehouse is remodeled for their wedding reception. The warehouse can’t get finished because Evans keeps jumping around to stories like Bernice being an RA with no reason for being one. We’re looking at years of waiting, sorry. Although it doesn’t bother me, I’m over the wedding. Should have happened last summer. . . .-————————————-I’ve lost interest in the wedding, in anything in Peru, in anything involving Luann’s college experience (especially Zebo), in anything involving Dez, in anything involving the warehouse.

Let me reprise my comments about first responders joking around a lot. They do, and I personally would rather they do that than be deadly serious, other than when they are saving lives, such as mine or my family’s. I think the comment was funny, very much on the ironic tip: I mean Brad is happily engaged to this smokin’ hot blonde beauty, who truly loves him, and eventually they are to be married. So she teases him in the vein of the prior discussion. It’s not that hard to figure out, and to think that Evans means disrespect to elderly people in any sense is nonsense.
Airman about 9 years ago
The warehouse arc was dull until the mysterious Mr. Gray spoke up, then they broke away to the equally dull college dorm brownies, now things are following the same pattern, so something is about to pop up here, too,

I’m starting to wonder if these two really are going to get married…………..but Toni was the one who started the topic… or maybe now that Brad has found his hot woman he can now find another line of work.

Just dropped in to see if this strip improved at all since I dropped it from my email delivery. No, it hasn’t, so I’m not picking it up again. Will continue to look for good new comics.

SPOILER ALERT!!
Whoa! Are we about to witness a totally unscheduled cultural event???
JayBluE about 9 years ago
Actually, there are plenty of women who are considered “older”.. and who also make “self- effacing” jokes about it, and who look good, to boot! – You have many women who look good, and have a great sense of humor about themselves and life, in general! (Phylicia Rashad, Vanna White, Raquel Welch, Lynda Carter, the list goes on and on!) – And whether considered “attractive” or “not”, many women celebrities also like to play on certain jokes about “stereotypes”, even when it involves themselves! – In fact, Phyllis Diller was a married housewife, who made a living making fun of herself" for practically her whole career! – And as a male example, Rodney Dangerfield !!!!

Luannverse remember. I started reading this comic maybe 20 or more years ago, probably more. When I started reading it Luann was in grammer school, and was pining over, what i believed to be kind of loser boy, Aaron Hill. She, and her cast of supporting characters, have moved through high school, and now college, over a bit longer of a period than it would happen in the real world, but not that much longer. I mean after all Dennis the Menace has been a 7 or 8 your old kid for 50 or 60 years. Meanwhile there have been plenty of stories within the characters, both Luann and the supporting cast. Brad and Toni, whew!! Now there is a very interesting arc, with characters who have developed and matured and grown along the way. So my suggestion is to be patient, and just let it flow. This is a masterful comic, but one has to be willing to follow the story as it develops, and not get irritated—too much anyway—as it takes the time to develop.
