Grandma and Great grandma raised chickens and ducks in the back yard. Mom slaughtered both as a young girl. That’s the way life was back in the ’30s and ’40s.
I think cooncat’s point is that most food animals in factory farms are tormented by bored and insensitive workers before they finally die. Not the same as grandmom going out back and humanely killing a hen she’d up to then raised and fed. She probably didn’t slam it against the wall or stomp on it for fun first. Unless she was a very sick lady.
While I hate agreeing with Bucky on anything, our predominant food mammals are not native to North America you can’t just turn them loose without wrecking havoc on the environment (and I don’t even want to think about car-cow collisions). While there are North American wild boars, domestic pigs are very, very different from them. So eat them or kill them and let them rot?
While I don’t agree with my vegan and vegetarian friends, like Rob would be, I respect them. Bucky doesn’t. But he is the personification of a true carnivore, a cat. Humans are omnivores and would not have survived and evolved in many places without meat. It is interesting to note that indigenous cultures, many hunters, and most small farmers are respectful to the animals they kill, butcher and eat.
I think it’s more likely your grandmother went out and snatched up a young rooster, not a young hen. Hens were eaten only after they got old and stopped laying, and then it was the stew pot, not frying or roasting.

Quality of life is important. Even for food animals.

Bucky hasn’t even a passing familiarity with Hinduism, does he?

I’ll have to ruminate on that one for a while.
