Dick Tracy by Mike Curtis and Charles Ettinger for July 22, 2010

Getting closer to starting a new adventure. Gotta keep padding it a bit to line up the next yarn with Sunday.

Meanwhile, compare these last three Sunday strips of the Phantom:

    http://www.chron.com/apps/comics/showComick.mpl?date=20100704&name=Phantom

    http://www.chron.com/apps/comics/showComick.mpl?date=20100711&name=Phantom

    http://www.chron.com/apps/comics/showComick.mpl?date=20100718&name=Phantom

A bit of recapping in the first panel but it is weekly so it’s intended to jog the reader’s memories. Outside of that, notice how the story moves along. No forced pacing to make the story fit the daily and Sunday spots. And the daily Phantom strip, a separate storyline, also moves right along.

Time for Dick Tracy to wise up and use separate storylines.

Maybe the new adventure will have more depth, it won’t be so two-dimensional.

I sure will rest easier knowing who’s wearing that star–a cop who can almost outrun the bad guys.

I love ‘The Phantom’ and read it daily. The apparent death of Diana, and her kidnapping make for a great story.

My local newspaper still runs the Phantom but dropped Dick Tracy for Tundra. I wonder why. I must say Tundra shows better police work than anything I’ve witnessed here.

I like The Phantom even better than Dick Tracy. It’s much more realistic.

There’s good news and there’s bad news.

Good: The hand in panel two actually bears some resemblance to a human hand.

Bad: Drawing it was such an effort that there was nothing left over for rendering a vaguely realistic police badge.

Can you imagine when Tracy reaches for his oversize badge and says, “Excuse me while I whip this out!”

    Here’s a link for Tundra:

After you read it you will agree that it does a better job of realistically portraying police work than DT.

I agree with you. The Phantom is more realistic than Dick Tracy, even though the hero runs around in purple long underwear.

Do you think he’s one of those, Panel-Panner?

It’s cruel to compare this has-been strip with the Phantom.

Long underwear superhero? Like Spider-Man? Yup. It’s amazing how either hero, purple or red duds plus mask, look less ridiculous in action than Tracy lately. And for someone working in the jungle, you’d think the Phantom would wear green to blend into the background.

The best comic illustrator of all time was Alex Raymond. He drew Flash Gordon, Jungle Jim, and Rip Kirby. Rip Kirby is online at http://www.dailyink.com/en-us/my_dailyink/index.php

So tell me again why that hungry person sitting in the street is resting easier. Because Tracy is a bad actor? Because Tracy is only interested in his badge? Because Tracy will keep the streets clean of criminals so they can continue to sit there and starve? I don’t get it.

Why will the city rest easier knowing that their top detective will run away at the first sign of danger and that their police chief is oblivious to a murder directly in front of her?

I agree with you all about the Phantom. I’m especially intrigued about Diana’s storyline and whether his shipboard babe will create a serious problem when Diana finally does show up. I love the little tag lines they have: “Phantom is rough on roughnecks,” “It is said that at times the Phantom leaves the jungle and walks among men.” (Something like that.) What’s always bothered me…wearing that tight fitting set of long johns every day…his Lotrimin bill must be out of this world.

Finally, Tracy is in a more realistic comic strip. Check out Dick Tracy appearing in today’s Brewster Rockit:

I know that a few years ago I certainly rested easier knowing that Martha Stewart was behind bars! (Actually, one should use the adverb and say: “….rested MORE EASILY…” )

From the look on that homeless persons face the sign should read “Feed me or else”

So, throughout this story it became clear that Johnny Nothing was wearing a maske the came off when Anja shot him. Why didn’t Locher expose his face? It’s not like the mask is inviolable like the Lone Ranger’s

Hey, another cool Dick Tracy strip. Always the first read on gocomics.com. Love the style of the strip today.

All week long Brewster Rockit has an ink-spill visiting all the best comic strips. And today’s strip features Dick Tracy in with other comic strip favorites. You can see the whole week worth on this site. Cool stuff.

I have a collection of Phantom comic books dating back to the 50’s.

This is the second appearance of the homeless person. He/she will undoubtedly be involved in the next story, probably chasing DT around Jimmy Hale Mission.
