How could I have strayed? How could I have dropped the second comma? But I’ve been born again. Again, I shall follow the path of righteousness. Well, that might be a bit strong. But, definitely two commas after a period for me. (What about after a question mark?)
I was taught in English Class that it is 2 spaces after the end of a sentence but that was before computers. I think most modern style manuals call for one. I still use 2.
Back in the 1980s — before there were computers with decent typeface-handling capabilities — I worked two different computer-assisted phototypesetting machines. Both of them would gag if you tried to double-space after a period. Using proportionally spaced type, two spaces after a period is NOT the way it’s done. It’s one space.
I have given it much thought and studied both sides of the controversy and I’m sticking with two spaces! It makes a clear break and is less likely to not be noticed, PLUS in certain situations, when the last word is an abbreviation, it is not obvious that a new sentence is beginning. Example:He insisted on the title of Mr. Joseph however insisted on ignoring his wishes. ("Joseph begins a new sentence -not so obvious with only one space.)I continue to always type two spaces even when I’m fully aware that the software is going to squash it down to one.

“Two spaces after a period?” Sounds almost like the rhythm method to me. Going after the Catholic voting bloc?

It is right-one space is for people too lazy to hit the space bar twice in succession.

I can’t help but use to spaces, that’s how I learned to type in HS. It’s automatic.

So, Opus, is this an homage to “Gone With The Wind” and “Titanic”?

Ladie’s? Oh my; seems we’ve got bigger editing issues than two spaces.
