Laura: Why did we get up so early? Adam: We have to beat the traffic. Laura: We could have waited until lunchtime and there wouldn't have been any traffic, either. Adam: Oh, where's your sense of adventure? Laura: Safe and warm in our bed, where it will sleep for another three hours.

My favorite time of the day; getting on the road before dawn is always exciting. Except on the midwatch in the Navy, and the midnight shift at the hospital.

I always feel superior to people who aren’t morning people. Oops, did I wake you rearranging the pots and pans at 5;30 AM?

I used to leave for trips early in the morning - about 4 am. But now? Sleep, sleep, sweet sleep.

Hmmm, Brian Basset (the toonist) has people who want to sleep. Fred Basset is catching FIFTY (not forty) winks. Do I see a pattern here among Bassets?

I am an early on the road kind of guy as well, but I do not drive all day long. If I see something fun, I stop and may or may not get back on the road. I believe in enjoying what the trip offers, not reveling in the amount of miles driven in one day.

When we went through several states on vacation, my father always drove at night to avoid traffic. We liked it because it was a lot cooler in the summertime (no car air conditioning). And it was often in late July and early August when there are meteor showers that we could watch.

We also started early, stopped for breakfast at rush hour, then called it quits mid-afternoon to avoid evening rush hour and take advantage of the hotel pool.
