Duke: So what's the first thing you're going to do with your dough, Zonker? Zonker: I'm thinking of taking a long vacation. Frankly, I'm wrung out. Do you know how hard it is, screwing off year after year, keeping your options open, enduring the laughter of friends while waiting for your ship to come in? Duke: It's been rough for you, hasn't it, boy? Zonker: How do you tell people that you just know you have a rendezvous with destiny? Duke: Don't get bitter on me now, nephew. Zonker: I won't... I just wish people had believed in me!

It seems to me that Duke is working Zonker as Mohammad Ali did in his encounters

I always believed in you Zonker. Now, if you would see your way clear to lending me a couple of million until MY ship comes in, I will be forever grateful.
Your friend(!)

Interesting timing for the strip repeats this week to lead up to a record powerball jackpot… wonder who (if anyone) will be in the headlines Sunday as an instant near-billionaire.

Zonker will spend years as a nanny, then finally discover who he really is when Co. legalizes pot, which after all has always been Zonkers only hobby. I remember when the Zonker appeared in BD college football huddle as a WR, smoking weed

For any interested, my understanding is that people would invest in a trading ship to far places. Many would be destroyed by pirates or other hostiles and navigation was so uncertain that they never knew when they would return even if they did. Naetheless, if it return bearing items common elsewhere but treasured locally, all investors would be greatly enriched..As time went by with no word from the ship, investors would worry theirs would be one of the lost ones. They would try to sell their interest for whatever they could get ~~ cheaper and cheaper as time passed. Supposedly, Sir Isaac Newton worked out the probability that a ship a week late, a month late, whatever late would make it. That let him estimate how likely any given late ship was to make a profit if he bought the discounted shares..It paid the bills even though people often vilify speculators.(Those who complained about them when petroleum prices were rising haven’t said much lately as prices dropped but they again just as soon as the trend changes.)

I have some knowledge of how Zonker’s spent most of his history, but for some reason today I find myself wondering, did he ever have a girlfriend? (Or a boyfriend, for that matter, but I didn’t want to use “love interest”.)
