Pastor: ...I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. We'll now have the eulogistic reading. Curtis? Curtis: You got it, your grace. What can you say about a 25-year-old girl who died? That she was beautiful, and brilliant. That she loved Mozart and Bach and The Beatles. And me. Zonker: Curtis, what the hell is that? Curtis: It's from "Love Story." it was the closest I could find in the library.

The eulogy is so off the mark, it might be enough to wake the dead so they can object…

Erich Segal’s “Love Story” is proof of H. L. Mencken’s insight “Nobody ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public.” For more laughs google: site:www.nytimes.com “love story” segal reviewThe review has such classics as “Curiously, the novel, which I found almost unreadable” and “I can’t remember any movie of such comparable high-style, kitsch”. Every college should have a literature course called Crap 101 where big money making garbage like “Love Story” is studied in great detail because how else can you make a living with a B.A. in Literature.

MAD nailed “Love Story” beautifully. “She has ‘Old Movie’ disease. You know how today everyone dies horrible, gruesome deaths, but in old movies they died beautiful deaths? Well, her death is going to be so beautiful it will take YOUR breath away before it takes HER breath away.”

In the summer of 1970 when that particular waste of time was playing in the theatres, I was an usher in a movie theatre, back when they had such things. I saw Love Story 29 times, and to this day can quote whole passages from it, God knows why.

When “Love Story” was a current event I was a date-less, clue-less, very nerd-ish 17 year old. All the girls at both More Science and Commie Martyrs High School were certifiably crazy about that flick. I’ve never seen it, but I’ve seen “Easy Rider” ca 10 to the 10th times. So there.

I seem to recall that the movie was considered “Daring” for it’s time because it combined the Sex Scene and the Death Scene into just one take..These days, it’d be just another Quentin Tarantino flick but without the 100 Gallons of fake blood.
