People need to understand, most of the kids in the streets protesting fighting for change were students not hippies, most hippies (I know not all) but most were unemployed bums.
I remember those days. sigh, One time I was sitting on a bench in White Plains NY in my bike leathers when a yuppy asked what I thought I was doing there (I was waiting for the DMV to open) I told him if he didn’t go away I’d tie his calvins in a knot. – implied while he was still in them. he moved off.
This was the decade just before the mainstream free press was completely bought out and turned into the modern talking-heads-selling-an-agenda. Unfortunately, the folks in positions of influence like it that way.
Reminds me of something that happened to me when a couple of co-workers and I were in a hotel bar at a job convention. The band was playing the usual bland hotel bar music, then they asked for requests. I asked for a Beach Boys tune and then one by Chuck Berry. They knew them both, and afterwards, the female lead singer came over and sat with us and told us that the band really appreciated my requests because that was the kind of stuff they really liked to play but were not allowed to unless requested.
Waiting for someone to call “cultural appropriation” on a white male character singing the blues. That said, most of my friends that are to the left of centre do not see cultural appropriation but rather a mix of cultures, habits, religions, cloths, food etc. I guess it gets more contentious if you attack or mock a culture with the aim of putting individuals of that culture down.

I’m unconvinced hippies would have been much of an upgrade on valley girls.

You know, Luke Bryan’s “Tailgate Blues” make a good alternative.
(And they would also be a good rhythm for this if only I can tweak the lyrics right.)

The more things change, the more they remain the same.

Berke’s most deadly tendency – codgerly mooing about the good ol days. It was gross then and has aged terribly.
