Nowadays it is getting increasingly difficult to be off the grid. I doubt if Oliver could make his father disappear in 2020 if he wanted to. With such tools like facial recognition and our financial transactions being cashless and card less it is impossible to go anywhere without being seen and identified if you have ever been in the “system” to start with if someone in the government really wanted to find you. It is not Big Brother is watching you yet though some leaders across the political spectrum (not just the far right as we have seen recently) seem willing to sacrifice civil liberties for what they call the common good (AKA their grip on power) thus our society is beginning to mimic some of the dystopian scenarios presented as science fiction (Clockwork Orange, Orwell, Brave New World, some of the works of Philip Dick, etc. etc.) not so long ago….. Nothing short of a world-wide electromagnetic pulse will erase someone’s cyber footprint…..
Two decades before this, Charles Schulz made a similar statement about people being reduced to numbers when he introduced the character “5” into his strip.

Back in the 80’s we all thought it was the Government. How would we ever have predicted it would turn out to be Facebook.

So close to Cartoon Character Self-Awareness, but Oliver misses it by this much.

I’m so old, they still have punched cards for some of my records. Stored in some secret government warehouse somewhere. Probably near the Ark.

Don’t worry – just re-write him back into existence – and perhaps make a few minor improvements while you are at it.
