Wasup…The next dictionary of words and their spelling is now being written by the kids on the internet. lol. This dictionary will also include a whole new section on symbolic emotions. :-) The children of the internet are far beyond ‘think-speak’. Orwell was ahead of his time but he still missed the boat. :-(
I’m a lousy speller and dyslectic. I’ve always kept a dictionary near. As for Spell-Check, they never heard O the Red Sox. 2010 World Series Champions (please Lord). Yup, I learned to look it up in the dictionary when in doubt. Unfortunately, with a degree in Brit Lit, I still think some misspellings are right.
Just tried spell-check. The Sox were knocked out of damned Yankee Stadium again.
We Americans are lucky to have had Noah Webster who fixed at least some of English’s irregularities–so we no longer spell draught or plough, for example–but there is much work still to be done.
My recommendation is for everyone to start using informal spellings (nite, thru, altho, etc.) everywhere you can get away with it. Eventually the writers of dictionaries will give way and accept such spellings as the new standard.

But it would be so much easier to look words up in the dictionary if they were all spelled the way they sound.

Well, in my native language you write as you hear, or so they say… and people still make lots of spelling mistakes.

And maybe it’s the way it is so that you use your brain and think more, Earl.

That one drives me crazy too, FishStix. And who decided that “-tion” should be pronounced “shun”? Reading Spanish is so much easier than English.
Good morning, “naybors”!

Anyone who can spell a word only 1 way is not very creative!
