Something about Lawrence asking someone if they believed in fairies almost had coffee coming out my nose. It caught me off guard and triggered this thought… No malice intended..

A dollar a week for a 7 year old isn’t bad in the 80s. Poor Lawrence has to believe in fairies because his mother neglects him so. He needs to hope that someone will pay attention to him.
To tell the truth, I NEVER got any money under the pillow after I had the tooth fall off or whatever. I never got one cent at all. Do I believe the Tooth Fairy! Scoffs! Naahhhh! I don’t believe it anyway.
Why do parents feel the need to lie about things such as tooth fairies, Santa Claus, and the Easter Bunny, etc.? What purpose does it serve to make up stories like this only to have their children become completely disillusioned later on when they get older and learn the real truth? I never really trusted my parents again when that happened to me when I was a kid.
pattybf… you have a right to disagree with someone else’s comments, but I don’t think you have a right to judge their intentions. In fact, I find your comments more offensive and judgmental than the other two. They were simply making a joke.

Hard to say what Lynn was thinking at this phase of the strip. It would be a stretch to say that she had Lawrence’s future orientation planned out this far back.
To 2cats and WebSpider: I certainly did not intend to come off as judgmental. It’s just that I have had family members who laughed at the “Joke” and the “double entendre” so that they would be part of the group and then came home and cried because they were so hurt. I have never told anyone that they are going to burn in eternity(I have enough to worry about with my own soul!) I leave that to folks on this site who insist on banging me over the head with their religious beliefs and bible quoting. I am sorry that I offended anyone, it was not intentional.
@pattybf+ I knew they were trying to be funny and show that they knew the future of Lawrence (I do, too) but still thought the “joke” was in poor taste.

Lawrence’s father was Dr. Pablo DaSilva, a Brazilian Physician. So Lawrence is half Hispanic. (Info from the FBoFW official website)
