I remember one instance in a particularly rowdy school in this country (mentioned in the media) where a new teacher came into the class, took a large knife, and slammed it down on the desk.
Was he a Gurkha? The oft-mentioned legend that a Gurkha could not sheath his knife until it had some blood on it would certainly convince many kids to behave.
Substitute teacher in HS English class: “What are you studying?”.Class: “We were supposed to write an essay today, but the paper is in that locked drawer in the teacher’s desk.”.Sub: “Hmm. That’s a model A4 desk.” Lifts and drops one corner of the desk. Rattles a different drawer. Smacks hand against the top of the desk. Slams the far end of the desk with his hip… and the designated drawer pops open!.Result: Complete respect for the sub, with no need to hint of potential violence. We wrote the essay. 8^)
I know I’m giving a hint of my age but when we had a substitute teacher, all the students showed respect for them and all the teachers…“where have all the flowers gone?”
We had one poor student teacher who was absolutely hopeless and whom we played up, but when her own teachers came in to examine her and see how she was doing we behaved like angels and asked her only the few questions which we already knew she could answer. In retrospect I’m not sure we did either her or her unfortunate future pupils any favours.
Then never met me as a substitute…..I’d tell them from the start that we would have the kind of class they decided….be good…don’t get too loud and do what I asked….and we’d have the most laid-back class they’d ever had…..try to rock the boat….and you’ll wish you never had done it….only one class rocked the boat, and they got what I promised…..the next day….they were almost angelic.

I never have any trouble when I substitute, but then I’m 6’6" and 240lbs +/- =)

As a Senior We once made a ’Male " substitute teacher leave the room in tears…Sequoia High School Redwood City Ca. 1962…The best.
Even the girls were vicious….
