Frank, don’t look behind you, but ’let’s make sure the drywall is done right’…

Having recently changed our own Thanksgiving plans (we will be dining at home now), i got thinking about the Degroots. Will the fire portion of the story resolve so that all the Degroot clan, both family and acquired family, will be able to be together around the table on Thursday? If not, won’t this be the family’s first Thanksgiving without all members of the immediate family being there?

Mr. Degroot’s handyman expertise must be a little rusty.

it’s tough to keep a person of many talents from just doing what needs to be done. TJ has always been an “ask forgiveness later” type so they should be used to this.

I’m confused. What did Frank (and Nancy) think “Plan BAT” was all about? How does this come as a surprise to Frank now?

Considering that Frank and Nancy are actively helping TJ remodel the house, it should have gone without saying that he had their approval to remodel the house.

I was told to hang drywall across the studs for extra rigidity but I’ve seen it done both ways, usually with nails or screws. I hope Nancy didn’t get too startled from the falling drywall sheet. I can see her mud pan flying onto Frank’s head! An “A” for effort, anyway.

If you buy a fixer upper house like I did, you will learn drywall, plumbing, electricity, and a lot of other things the hard way.

Is he seriously using a stabler for drywall?

The person who invents a staple gun, or air gun that will nail drywall, will make millions. I ran a one man show drywall co. for 20+ years.

Drywall should be hung butting up to the ceiling. Any gaps that need to be filled should be near the floor where the seams can be more easily covered by moulding, or furniture, etc.

I thought maybe Greg was giving a shout-out to Canadian contractor and TV star Mike Holmes, who says “do it right the first time” and knows how to to just that. :-)

Er, what? He’s stapling drywall? And vertical? Tsk.Besides being stronger (drywall has a grain) going perpendicular to the studs, that one horizontal joint is a lot less footage to tape and mud (and easier to get to for us short folk) than multiple vertical ones.

He says as the wall he just put up falls to the floor. smh.

Looks like a typical cartoon story line where everything falls apart as soon as it’s done.

Might help if he was using a drill instead of a staple gun…

Obviously he doesn’t know how to hang drywall. You don’t do it with a staple gun.

It’s OK to do a shabby job hanging the drywall. TJ and Brad will just smash it with a sledgehammer anyway, the next time Shannon comes over and goes missing.

Although drywall can be installed vertically, most pros now install it horizontally… either way, NO ONE uses a staple gun!

Being that Shannon is the most intelligent person in the place, they should put her in charge… mallets and glue paste mixed with bubble gum, should do the trick!!

Hmm… Can’t say I’ve ever seen drywall being hung with staples.. Running it horizontally also tends to give fewer seams. ;-)

If he’s using nails to nail the drywall to the wood, why is it falling off? Or did he put the nails in the wrong spot?

You do not use a staple gun for drywall – ever.

I clicked on a cartoon and got a “how to” book on putting up drywall. Now, that is a dry subject. Get on with the wildfire, or go back to Tiffany shopping for skimpy little things.

When we use volunteer labor, we get what we pay for.

Is is machismo or mythology that causes so many men to think they can repair both cars and houses naturally, without any training?

I’m getting this really grim feeling someone is going to die in the forest fire.

Are they adding a bedroom? I can’t remember.

Should have added sound insulation.

Where I come from, drywall is usually fastened with drywall screws.

Man, so many people pointing out Frank’s mistake of using staples to put up drywall…one might think you all didn’t bother to read the comments…

I think the real message of this entire story line is summed up in the strip of a few days ago where TJ and the Fire Captain were giving the same message to their respective crews.

Thanksgiving note: premature mastication in our home has begun. Half the sweet potato pie is gone!
