TJ: Wow! you know how to hang drywall, Mr. D? Dad: Yes. TJ, who owns this house? TJ: You and the missus, sir. And I should've asked before remodeling. Dad: Yes, you should have. Fortunately, we don't hate what you've done here, TJ. Dad: Let's just be sure it's done right, ok?

Frank, don’t look behind you, but ’let’s make sure the drywall is done right’…

Having recently changed our own Thanksgiving plans (we will be dining at home now), i got thinking about the Degroots. Will the fire portion of the story resolve so that all the Degroot clan, both family and acquired family, will be able to be together around the table on Thursday? If not, won’t this be the family’s first Thanksgiving without all members of the immediate family being there?
Templo S.U.D. about 8 years ago
Mr. Degroot’s handyman expertise must be a little rusty.
cdgar about 8 years ago
Done right is a real good idea Frank.

it’s tough to keep a person of many talents from just doing what needs to be done. TJ has always been an “ask forgiveness later” type so they should be used to this.

I’m confused. What did Frank (and Nancy) think “Plan BAT” was all about? How does this come as a surprise to Frank now?
gromit82 about 8 years ago
Considering that Frank and Nancy are actively helping TJ remodel the house, it should have gone without saying that he had their approval to remodel the house.
JR0602 about 8 years ago
I was told to hang drywall across the studs for extra rigidity but I’ve seen it done both ways, usually with nails or screws. I hope Nancy didn’t get too startled from the falling drywall sheet. I can see her mud pan flying onto Frank’s head! An “A” for effort, anyway.

Grace Hopper. It’s easier to ask forgiveness than it is to get permission. Rear Admiral Grace Murray Hopper (9 December 1906 – 1 January 1992) was a U.S. Naval officer, and an early computer programmer

Sad trombone for Frank, ever portrayed as the fool.

If you buy a fixer upper house like I did, you will learn drywall, plumbing, electricity, and a lot of other things the hard way.

Is he seriously using a stabler for drywall?
greenearthman about 8 years ago
The person who invents a staple gun, or air gun that will nail drywall, will make millions. I ran a one man show drywall co. for 20+ years.
eclark about 8 years ago
Drywall should be hung butting up to the ceiling. Any gaps that need to be filled should be near the floor where the seams can be more easily covered by moulding, or furniture, etc.
ekw555 about 8 years ago
you don’t put drywall up with a stapler!

Don’t you use a hammer and nails?

Boy, Frank must’ve mixed up his briefcase with his tool box, again! And maybe he left his Craftsman case at work…
-
If he’s stapling sheets to a wall, I’d hate to see what happens at work, when it’s time to fasten some papers together, and he reaches into his toolbox…
Schrodinger's Dog about 8 years ago
wonder if that board is gonna conk Nancy on the head?!
Tyge about 8 years ago
Oops! Just a reminder from “The Benefactor.” Or did Greg E just now wake up and say “Hey! TJ shouldn’t have been able to do this without permission”?
JayBluE about 8 years ago
That is, if Nancy doesn’t do that to Frank , first!

I thought maybe Greg was giving a shout-out to Canadian contractor and TV star Mike Holmes, who says “do it right the first time” and knows how to to just that. :-)
RoseHawke about 8 years ago
Er, what? He’s stapling drywall? And vertical? Tsk.Besides being stronger (drywall has a grain) going perpendicular to the studs, that one horizontal joint is a lot less footage to tape and mud (and easier to get to for us short folk) than multiple vertical ones.
barister about 8 years ago
He says as the wall he just put up falls to the floor. smh.

Looks like a typical cartoon story line where everything falls apart as soon as it’s done.
a1151762150 about 8 years ago
Might help if he was using a drill instead of a staple gun…
2Goldfish about 8 years ago
Obviously he doesn’t know how to hang drywall. You don’t do it with a staple gun.

All that’s left is the interior of the house [walls, floors, ceilings, windows, cabinets, etc.]

Well actually Frank, the Bank “Owns” that House, but YOU are Right. Old Smiley SHOULD have Asked You FIRST but of Course He NEVER Does because He KNOWS that whatever He does, YOU and indeed, MANY of the Gentle Souls Here, will Quickly and Happily FORGIVE Him.

There’s a reason they created drywall screws, Frank….

It’s OK to do a shabby job hanging the drywall. TJ and Brad will just smash it with a sledgehammer anyway, the next time Shannon comes over and goes missing.
Mikeyj about 8 years ago
Although drywall can be installed vertically, most pros now install it horizontally… either way, NO ONE uses a staple gun!
Mikeyj about 8 years ago
Being that Shannon is the most intelligent person in the place, they should put her in charge… mallets and glue paste mixed with bubble gum, should do the trick!!
DADOF3 about 8 years ago
Hmm… Can’t say I’ve ever seen drywall being hung with staples.. Running it horizontally also tends to give fewer seams. ;-)
ai_vin about 8 years ago
Frank’s using a stapler to hang drywall? That’s a big No No.
skesif about 8 years ago
If he’s using nails to nail the drywall to the wood, why is it falling off? Or did he put the nails in the wrong spot?
ewbank about 8 years ago
Uh. Hanging drywall with a stapler?
evergrey about 8 years ago
Haha, they think that level of remodeling will take a day?I’ve done home remodeling before. Try weeks. Or months.
bryan42 about 8 years ago
You do not use a staple gun for drywall – ever.
Airman about 8 years ago
I clicked on a cartoon and got a “how to” book on putting up drywall. Now, that is a dry subject. Get on with the wildfire, or go back to Tiffany shopping for skimpy little things.

Uhh, Frank?
About that “done right” thing?Staples aren’t getting the job done right: look behind you!
namelocdet about 8 years ago
Hanging drywall with a staple gun??? And where’s the insulation?
JPuzzleWhiz about 8 years ago
Man, so many people pointing out Frank’s mistake of using staples to put up drywall…one might think you all didn’t bother to read the comments…

I think the real message of this entire story line is summed up in the strip of a few days ago where TJ and the Fire Captain were giving the same message to their respective crews.
