There would be sound waves, but for there to be sound, someone has to be there to translate the waves into sound.

Try not to confuse “sound”, with “hearing”…

This reminds me of the old joke: If a man talks in the forest, and there is no woman to hear him, is he still wrong?

If a sound is a vibration, then all vibrations are sounds.

Not all vibrations are sounds because there are ears incapable of hearing them.

Therefore not all vibrations are sounds.

In this case since it is used in conjunction with “for,” it is used as a noun.
