Ah Ha!! And everybody misses the real point. Jack has a date with both girls. Luann is rueful, while Tiffany is happy and triumphant. Win, win, win (hmmmm).
I really don’t understand. Why would Luann be upset at Tiffany dating somebody she doesn’t even want? And it’s not like catching Jack proves anything. Smile at him and he’ll come running, wagging his tail. Yet somebody must feel this way or the cartoon wouldn’t bother—humor depends on recognizability. I love human beings, but no matter how hard I try to understand, sometimes they just utterly mystify me!
Luann got zapped by her own frivolity. She tried to use him, but didn’t realize that he was just a nice guy who wanted to spend some time with her. Too bad, because Tiffany is no booby prize and no scholar, so they might have fun. It was Luann’s ego that got hurt, not her heart.
Tiff will show up for work the next day still half drunk and disheveled from the club. Then she can tell Luann about the 50 dates she had that night. Meanwhile, Luann yuks it up while Tiff is throwing up.
.
For Luann, however, it will be a walk in the park. Literally.
A fairly clever punch line, Tiff. I think we can respect Tiffany more as a B*tch than as a Bimbo. So now we will see if Luann is going to do the right thing for the wrong reason – or the wrong thing for the wrong reason.
I know this is a comic; however, it really does portray a negative female stereotype. Two women fighting over a guy that wasn’t even important until important until one woman wanted to keep the other from having him. It also play to the “even the nice girls ain’t nice” crowd. Again, I know it’s a comic and this is just a silly rant.
Luann is eternally stepping on her own toes. She can’t follow thru and when Tiff does she gets upset. She called Jack, she should have gone out with him to show up Tiff but she is incapable of doing that.
I have no sympathy for Luann. She was going to use a guy she has no interest in to stroke her ego. Whereas Tiff seems to actually think Jack is attractive, so Luann should just stuff it.
1) Jack, ole buddy, you da MAN! 2) Tiff punked Luann once again, or was it twice? 3) Luann, time to measure yourself by a different yardstick. Then these things wouldn’t happen. 4) Well now Puddles will finally make an appearance.
Luann is flunking Assertiveness Training 101. The passing grade would be “I am sorry Jack, that I misled you. But now I realize that I don’t want to go to the dog park with you. You and Tiff have fun though. You have a lot in common.”
@SCHRODINGER’S DOG: I was disappointed when this arc started with Tiffany reverting to her high school self to torment Luann, and now I’m disappointed with the way the cartoonists have reverted Luann to a jealous high school kid. Maybe the cartoonists have just lost interest in ‘Luann’ as a character. I’m going to just concentrate on other ’toons for awhile. If I wanted to deal with nasty bullies and overwhelmed confused kids, I could just stick with the real world.
OK – Let’s get it done. Jack stands Luann up Sunday morning at the dog park because he’s still with Tiffany. Les is working as an assistant to barista Ann Eiffel in order to pay back money he stole. Pru shows Crystal true love and steals her from Knute. And the TV repairman brings back the set. That leaves us with Luann finding a job on the Internet and moving to New York.
There they are again, 1st panel, side by side. Does anyone really believe that any guy wouldn’t be thrilled to have someone looking like Tiffany show an interest in him? Tiffany takes a lot of time and trouble to be attractive, she deserves at least a nibble now and then. And, in her after- shower bathrobe and no makeup session with Gunther, she looked even better.
So far, the jock has been presented as a overconfident, pushy jerkish kind of guy. Not particularly a forever type of guy, don’t you all think? Luann did do a not nice thing by trying to use him to make Tiffany jealous but she should consider herself lucky she didn’t have to follow through on a date-date. The dog park thing should be easy enough to get out of.
Tiff is going out with Jack tonight. I think by Sunday she will not like the idea of him going out with Luann and try to stop that. She will not want to share Jack with another woman.
@AIRMAN: “Does anyone really believe that any guy wouldn’t be thrilled to have someone looking like Tiffany show an interest in him?”
…
It might dissuade a guy if things went further and he knew he would be just one in a line of husbands – to be thrown away when she spots a new one. (Tiff admitted that is her plan)
.
Besides, when the looks are gone, in her case, there might not be much left. I am more attracted to inner beauty, but I was very lucky for a younger one with both inner and outer beauty to choose me. In August, we will be married 27 years and have two great kids. No disposable people here…
@THA_HYPE: "So far, the jock has been presented as a overconfident, pushy jerkish kind of guy. Not particularly a forever type of guy, don’t you all think? "

Tiffany has already said that she will have a number of husbands, so when it comes to “forever” types, they should be a good match.
Of course this won’t happen, because when does anything (real or fantasy) happen the way I want it to? But I can imagine Tiffany all dressed up (the way she overdressed to go on her field trip with Gunther for class), and Jack arrives in his typical gear. She discovers that the band is not playing at a nice, fancy club with high priced drinks, but in a barn or someone’s garage, or out a warehouse. No one is in fancy duds. No high priced drinks, but lots of beer. The band is really loud; no one can hear what the other person is saying. There really isn’t ‘dancing’, but there’s a pit where guys smash into each other, and members of the band periodically dive into it and are carried around. So are some of the girls (Tiffany?), who are expected to dance (suggestively) on the stage. At the end of the evening, Tiffany either scared about Jack showing up again (until she can think of a good reason why she isn’t free to go out with him) or is angry at Luann for ‘dumping’ this guy on her.
.
Meanwhile, Luann shows up at the dog park, but Jack has a bad hangover. So he doesn’t want to stay long. While Luann is walking Puddles, she runs into a guy from one of her other classes, and he invites her to the opening of a brand new cartoon museum at the community college. The museum is offering classes in ‘cartooning with children’…
This is not the mature side of Luann. That said, is there any mature side to Luann……… yet? But to her credit, she kept her mouth shut and allowed Tiffany move in on Jack. Luann got (mostly) what she deserved. It was rude of her not to introduce Tiffany who was right there and to be playing Jack along despite the fact that she did not want to go out with him, essentially using him; she called him up and thus initiated the interaction.
I tend to think that Jack (as a character) was created with Tiffany in mind. He is exactly the kind of guy she pines for. They seem well matched. It just took a while for their paths to cross.

I also predict she will probably hate the band.
