Arlo: Netflix? Hulu? Vudu? Crackle? Amazon?
Arlo: Sad, isn't it?
Arlo: Never again will children meet at recess to analyze last night's episode of 'The Beverly Hillbillies'!

We’ve lost the sense of childhood innocence. The belief that children should believe in Santa Claus and fairies. To our detriment.

My grade school friend Jack and I, in the late 60s, would separately watch The Red Skelton Show the night before, and then at school the next day, sitting in the back of the class, we would impulsively trade jokes and lines from the skits and laugh as quietly as we could. (At least once, not quietly enough.)

The real problem isn’t that children don’t have common entertainment to talk about; it’s that adults don’t have common news to talk about. Used to be people could have their own opinions about the news, but they all based their opinions on the same news (the three networks all covered the same news).
Now, we can’t begin to discuss opinions rationally when we aren’t basing them on the same events. Some people say we have to stop immigration – look at what immigrants are doing! The Bowling Green massacre, the massacre in Atlanta…. Of course neither of those massacres really happened, but how can we have a rational discussion of opinions if we aren’t basing them on the same facts?

Kids are lucky now if they get recess, instead of all-day cramming for standardized tests.
