J.J.: What can I tell you, honey? Following your heart isn't always easy, but Zeke is still my soulmate... Alex: He is? J.J.: Yup... hold on, that's him on the other line. Zeke? Zeke: Hey, babe. I need you to post bail. J.J.: What? Zeke: I'll pay you back this time, promise. J.J.: Hold on... Alex? Dump him!

Do not listen to your mother, Alex.

I agree with GEE1A, comparing Toggle to Zeke is ridiculous. Toggle may be have been dealt an enormous set back and is in a tough situation, but he’s persevered and tries to better himself. Proving he has more character than Zeke ever will.

Did I miss something? I thought Toggle was wounded by an IED. How is that related to his obsession with music?
prasrinivara over 15 years ago
myhaircut, I think gmartin997 is claiming that Toggle may have been listening to music when the IED blew up.
On the nail Marg–comparing Zeke with Toggle is like comparing Al Sharpton with Billy Sunday!

Yah, my newspaper moved DB to the editorial page also some time ago and now it isn’t there at all. Only in the Sunday funnies. It does look like Toggle and Zeke are not to be compared, but contrasted.

Billy Sunday was a racist! He was nothing like Al Sharpton.
And CaptXpendable’s point was that Zeke and Toggle are nothing alike as well.

Oh, Alex…..don’t listen to her!
Well, why would she? Alex doesn’t have much respect for JJ – since JJ is hardly worthy of respect.
My point the other day, re: Why JJ stays with Uncle Stupidhead – JJ paid a pretty steep price when she left boring ol’ Mike to “follow her heart.” Now, on some level she has to realize Zeke is a jerk (and I’m only calling him such a mild term to keep this clean!) But admitting that, even to herself, would be an impossible blow to her pride. So she has to defend her decision beyond all reason.
Meanwhile, boring ol’ Mike has a new, happier marriage, a good life, and the affection and respect of their daughter. I’d say he got the much better part of that bargain.

Too bad for J. J. that Duke didn’t have a little better aim all those years ago.

So, maybe Toggle wasn’t so bright when he had his music cranked and ran into an IED, but now he seems like an honest young guy who is pursuing his dream despite his setback.
Uncle Stupidhead, on the other hand, is just a plain jerk (just like my sister’s first husband).
It should be Alex telling JJ to dump Uncle Stupidhead.

Alex needs to be talking to Dad, NOT MOM, for advice!!!! If she listens to JJ it will be truly pitiful

Remember Pogo? I loved that strip as a kid. Then in the 80’s they made a movie. The politition running for election answered every question, “jest fine.” If gocomics has Berke Breathed reruns how about Pogo reruns too?

Misery loves company. JJ is what my wife calls an energy vampire.

I agree Toggle is nothing like Uncle Stupidhead. Toggle has a job!

JA Doty, and al sharpton is not a racist???? Give me a break!!!

Pardon me for asking, but what part of running over an IED (or not) depends on someone driving a truck *hearing it???
Unless you want to argue that listening to that demon rock & roll music brought God’s hand down on Toggle, and He made him hit the bomb in the road??
IanSaunders over 15 years ago
Speaking of Uncle Stupidhead, was yesterday’s strip the first time we’ve heard Alex’s new nickname for him: “Uncle Chucklebutt”?

Stay out of it, JJ. You forfeited your mom credentials ages ago.

Yeah, “Doonesbury” is also on the Editorial page of my local paper. On the bottom left corner, to be exact. And what’s on the bottom right corner, you may ask? “Mallard Fillmore”, of course; about as funny as the Letters to the Editor, which appear on the same page, written by my community’s right-wing nuts. Almost every issue, Garry Trudeau shows a level of wit and subtlety in “Doonesbury” that Bruce Tinsley, the writer and illustrator of “Mallard Fillmore”, is totally incapable of achieving.

In my newspaper “Doonesbury” appears in the classified section with all of the junk listings. A move to the editorilal page would be a big step upward.

Toggle had his music cranked. He didnt hear the warning coming over the radio warning about the IED. Had he not had his IPOD wired through the trucks raido system he would have had some warning.
