I’m sorry that I offended many of you with this comic.
I was trying to make a point. Too many people just regard Memorial Day as a three-day weekend. They don’t want to think about the dead we’re supposed to be honoring.
Beyond that and on a personal note, I was also trying to highlight the absurdity of people who expect bereaved family members to quickly “snap out of it” and stop crying.
I know from personal experience that recovery is a long, slow process.
Unfortunately, those points don’t seem to have come through in the comic. (Or at least not in a humorous way.) And, for that, I’m sorry.
I understand this comic, and applaud your effort. It is easy to misunderstand though. One of my pets peeves is when someone on Memorial Day says “Have a Happy Holiday”, and this cartoon to some may seem a little close to that. Not me though, I like it.
This one pinged my very finely tuned sarcasm detector….but i can see how it might have not been received well and labelled “not funny” bordering on un-patriotic". (and for me growing up, memorial day was just about the timing of a late weekend in May where it was “safe” to go put flowers on grandpa’s grave.) So my bias is “everyone gets flowers and the soldiers also get a flag”.
I can see both sides of this deal. What you say about Memorial Day is completely true and I’m glad to see it get more and more recognition every year. I lost my father in the Air Force in a training accident 60+ years ago so really my family should have honored it but we just didn’t do that 50 years ago so I’m trying to catch up now. Great series, and keep up the good work.

This comic would probably play better on Labor Day. As it doesn’t look at all like a military funeral, I see no need to take offense.

I think he’s saying that it wasn’t meant to be a 3 day party weekend. It was intended to be a day of solemn observance…
