Yes Puck, good boys do deserve milk – as long as it’s lactose free milk. My Nyssa would patiently wait for me to finish my cereal so she could lick the milk off the bottom. She’d often lick up the weetabix too, don’t know why she liked it but the bowl was always spotless.
My late father would actually let one of our cats lap milk out of his bowl while he continued to eat the cereal. It was only that one favored cat, and I didn’t follow his example.
My cat’s favourite trick is hooking a paw into the rim of the cereal bowl to try to tip it over. She’s only succeeded once, and went to town lapping up all the milk while I went to grab cleaning supplies.
Toward the end of his life, my beloved Saul had chronic constipation. The vet and I tried several things, but the only thing that helped was when suddenly he started begging for some of the goat’s milk I put in my coffee. Immediate results! I learned to give him a couple of tablespoonfuls every day. He seemed to love it, though cow’s milk left him cold. He’d only taste cow’s milk if it had been used to cover sweetened cereal.
One of ours actually likes the cereal – or at least, one particular type of cereal. We’ll give her one flake of it to lick or chew on to keep her busy while we finish eating.
I used to have a cat that always came by me to get some milk when I was eating my cereal, I still miss that sometimes. My other cat that I still have Maxie sometimes comes but the milk doesn’t really agree with her so I will only give a little bit. Actually I sometimes think she might know it doesn’t agree with her because she doesn’t ask for it often and when she does it seems like a hairball appears not that long after.
My mother used to beat an egg into milk as a special treat for the cats; as a result they’d come running whenever they heard the egg-beater (the old manual kind). Same as when they heard the creaky drawer in which we kept (among other things) catnip. Looking back 40 years, I wish I had given them catnip more often. o/~ you don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone…
Mine are terribly spoiled beggars – sometimes eating half my meals. Eh, good for dieting, I suppose. The three in the house bother me mercilessly for milk in the morning, and the barn cats follow me around until they get milk and eggs to go with their crunchies.
…the best cat our family ever had was from way back in my youth, and he ALWAYS drank milk. He was started on milk after he was weaned, and he never stopped. It never bothered his stomach, and he wouldn’t touch water if it was offered (though I suspect he would drink it out of old buckets, flowerpots or puddles outside)…I read somewhere that cats lose their ability to digest milk after they are weaned, but maybe because he never stopped drinking it, he continued to produce lactase, and therefore could digest it all his life – who knows :)…he used to wait until there was the morning scramble to get ready for school, and when we were distracted, he would tip over any glasses on the table that had any milk left in them…
I sometimes have a problem with my cereal milk too. But mine is either almond or coconut milk with frozen berries. I put the frozen berries on my cereal and the milk thaws them while I eat. I have had to turn almost 180 degrees to get away from a persistent cat who uses both mouth and paws to get what he wants. He even tries to lick my spoon. (and if he is interested, I will let him have the leftovers when I am finished.
This strip reminds me of my house. Of the four only 2 usually go for the milk of course the dog will get the lion’s share at the end. If there is chicken or lamb involved there is a lot of dodging and weaving on my part of course. I have to try not to harm any of the four while eating and the less hair in the food the better, but I do have to cut tiny pieces and offer it to the gods as a distraction so I can finish eating myself. Once that it done the dog does at the prewash sometimes including the cats if they got too much fat on them during the food wrestling process.
Our 9 year old B&W cat, Shellie, has no interest in anything but her Science diet kibblehelping keep her teeth clean. While the 3 other cats we used to have all wanted a taste of tuna fish when I made salad.
Never mind milk, our cat keeps trying to lick the Marmite off my toast. She is most affronted when told that it is not for kitties. If she has managed a swipe or two, I eat the toast anyway.
My Vlad will eat yogurt and frozen yogurt. But I can’t let him have my milk, I put Carnation instant breakfast drink that’s chocolate. Though I’m sure that it’s not true chocolate, still can’t take that chance.
I just now tried eating a ham and cheese sandwich, pushing a cat off my lap every 10 seconds. I finally gave up and put a sliver of the cheese in her food bowl. Now I can type and surf the ’net cat-free (for a while at least).
My husband had a tabby cat named Shadow, who although never got milk, went crazy for Wendy’s Frosties. She could recognize that yellow cup. If we came in with just a soda, we got the stink eye, but if it really did have that yummy frosty in it, she’d cajole, yowl, and try to dip her tail or paw into the cup. I’d usually put a few drops on the lid just to get her to calm down. Only thing she ever really begged for.
Woo hoo!!! Who has two thumbs and three copies of the 2018 BCN Calendar? This guy!! It’s wonderful! And I am delighted to see (on Georgia’s twitter feed) that she is working on the pages for a 2019 edition, too!! Oh, why three copies? One for home, one for work and one for gifting. Obviously.
This is me every morning! I have five cats, and at least two of them tag team me for milk, bottom of the cereal bowl, or first scoop, whatever they can get.
She Who Does Not Approve Of Us Packing Boxes To Move House usually does not bother very much about human food. Unless she smells fish, corned beef, roast beef, roast lamb, or roast chicken. And sometimes she asks me for a bit of pancake.

Purrfectly executed double play boys. I wonder how long they practice to make it look this easy.

Mine isn’t interested in the cereal milk, but sits and stares intently when I’m eating yogurt — he loves liking the carton when I’m done!

Milk? Meh. My orange tabby is a chlorophyll addict. Catnip, spinach, celery leaves—he eats them all.
