It would have to be meticulously researched and somehow make sure he can’t find anything that will contradict it. Or maybe just using the weight of their evidence versus what is on Wikipedia. Might work. Yes it would be interesting if it is Diet Smith since Oliver Warbucks doesn’t live there. And Oliver Warbucks is a scary fellow, especially with his two body guards The Asp and Punjab.
OK I’ve posted this TWICE Already this morning, I am getting annoyed! My guess for the mark is Wendy Witchell—I think she’d be very interested in this.
Much to the possible chagrin of a certain non-Marvel licensed avenger, I can really appreciate the detail and artistry of today’s single w/inset panel.
Public Domain is making it sound as if de Martinville’s visit to the White House is established fact, although the notion of a voice recording of Lincoln is only a rumor or legend. The article we were linked to yesterday acknowledged the legend, but said that it has never been established if de Martinville ever left France, much less visited the U.S. Any potential “mark” should be able to find out that same information.
My theory: In the Tracyverse, Mr. Am had deMartinville discreetly travel to various locations to make recordings that Am knew would be priceless in the future.
So, the “Lincoln recording” is indeed this scam’s Maltese Falcon. I suppose Silver Nitrate’s task will be to convince the mark that the Scott de Martinville visit to the White House in 1863 really did take place, and that the recording really was made, and that he (Silver) really can help the mark acquire the phonoautographic Lincoln artifact!
Who the mark may be is not yet certain, but one of the strip’s known rich collectors is likely, Diet Smith or Oliver Warbucks (I would be tempted to include Vitamin Flintheart also, but I’m not aware that the old thespian has enough wealth to be worth scamming). Given the technological aspect of the grift, I think Diet is more likely the mark….
The first sounds I ever heard played on a PC purported to be Edison’s recording of Brahms speaking and playing. I was so disappointed when I later learned it was a fake.

The inventor’s name was actually Scott. The “de Martinville” part means “from Martinville” which sounds like the name of a town.

A town named after the Martin family.

Reminds me of an X File episode where a piece of 1st century pottery allegedly existed that had the voice of Jesus recorded on it.
