When I was very small, my older siblings would slide down the supporting poles of the slide in our park (about 7 ft high), fireman style. I was two or three, and decided to try it. Unfortunately I didn’t grab on quick enough, and plummeted to earth. Fortunately, it WAS earth underneath, with long grass, not gravel! I got a concussion and a huge lump on my head. I still remember hearing the moms scream as I fell.
Nothing was broken, but decades later when I had a CAT scan we discovered the mark is still there on my forehead.
If Calvin could just change recess classes across the playground away from pushy Susie, he would learn a valuable lesson:The class is more serener on the other slide.
It’s weird – Calvin can take his wagon/sled down that monstrous hill in his backyard/woods [who knows how steep it really is] but a simple slide scares him. – Maybe Hobbes is the calming factor in his backyard.
When I was younger and even more stupid I hit my head falling out of a tree. Everybody told me that I have not been right ever since. Perhaps that explains me voting Democrat.
I loved the slide! There is a little park around the corner from me and I have a sneaky go on the swings when nobody is about. But I haven’t done so for a while now.

It’s not the swooping that concerns him, it’s the part after the swoop.
