Lichens provide coloration for lifeless sanctuary cemeteries..

Remember the Snail Darter!

I think of patches of lichens as little national forests. And we need all the stinking patches we can get!

I believe we have discovered a new consumer need, for a grave marker cleaning product.

We should get to work on catchy names and packaging immediately and get some focus groups empaneled to review the possibilities.

And maybe we can come up with a product, too.

What If? Grand Father has a million do!lar lichen on his tombstone.

The Drawing Dead Facebook page has over 30,000 lichens!

I would just like to point out that there are 4 lichen references in the first 3 lines, and ZERO lichen references in the last 3 lines (unless you count pronouns (and who does – the pronoun is the red headed stepchild of the word classes)).

Terrible case of top heavy lichen paragraph imbalance, Tee. Just terrible.

P.S. I would make a note to myself to quit reading FA but I seem to have lost my note pad.

Sorry to sound crass, but I have very little concern for the “survival” of every species of lichen there is. The evolutionary process necessarily includes extinctions, and as part of the Natural World I don’t mind taking part in the process at times. Lichen on a tombstone of concern to me is one of those occasions….

Where are all of these lichenologists? I opened our YELLOW PAGES (granted it’s small; small town = small phone book), and found no lichenologists. We have few -ologists of any kind, really.

The purpose is to get to know each other, and learn from each other while doing what we love to do: “lichenize.” These gatherings bring together much expertise and typically a species list results from our collaborative efforts.

If you manage a natural area, and are interested in hosting a lichen-blitz, please contact us. We are a low-maintenance group that usually camps or bunkhouses in remote locations. Formal permission to collect lichens is naturally needed. NWL will periodically review its blitz requests and optional associated donation, and schedule a foray to the most interesting area.
