It’s a riddle, people back then loved riddles and I believe the last like goes like this What is Humpty Dumpty. and the answer was “an egg”. There was another that was called “thirty white horses on a pink hill”.

Actually most of those old nursery rhymes were political satire of the day. The poor people couldn’t read so travelling minstrels travelled around the country singing songs about the government of the day.

Why did the chicken cross the road?

So she could lay it on the line.

Yes, you gotta love these kids! Poor Dill – Alice wears him out.

Gotta love the change in Alice’s expression from panel 2 to panel 3 as she tries lamely to rationalize her impetuous suggestion.

Now, like Dill, may I please go home, Miss Bliss? I’ve had enough of pre-school for today!

Lewis Caroll is generally credited for creating the egg character of the rhyme in ‘Alice Through the Looking Glass’, where Humpty Dumpty is shown as a round egg. However, it is a very old riddle rhyme and goes back much earlier than this.
