Finally see Luann dress modernly stylish. She’s always been a frumpy dresser. T-shirt with jeans, sometimes sweater. Keep up with this style. Fay has a girl crush on you – be her role model not just in theater but in fashion also!
Luann might have picked up some fashion ideas from Pru. When Pru is not in uniform, she often has dressed with a short skirt over tights. Which also may be somewhat theatrical.
Really sweet, Shows the kind of influence Luann is capable of having. Lets see where it leads Fay in her part. And I don’t see why people are suprised Luann, whom the comic is about, looks sharp.
Luann is obviously giving Fay some emotional medicine she needs.
But Fay’s mother has some real deficiencies in dealing sensitively with her daughter. Her blatant comments to Luann about Fay running at both ends are not inspiring to Fay. So it’s no wonder that Fay associates her mother with dreary old Kansas.
I just hope that Luann is comfortable with the warm puppy/kitten she’s just taken on. She’ll be stuck with it for a while.
Luann has been a “late bloomer” in many ways, including developing a more mature sense of style. It’s nice to see her finally showing some fashion sense! I wonder whether Luann is getting a boost in her own confidence as she sees that she’s having a positive effect on Fay… and that it’s also manifesting as a more confidence in the fashion department?
The big task for Luann is to be a guide but not a destination. Luann may have to deal with a teenage crush. It is suspenseful waiting to see where this goes. Nevertheless I wouldn’t mind jumping to Tiffany & Gunther, or Luann & Tara, or the aftermath of Ann’s lingerie party.
Fay is like so many kids I grew up with…myself included! She is the one in the back of the class praying NOT to get called on. I was “thrown to the wolves” in 9th grade when I got put into Drama class! My own Luann was my Drama teacher, and I will NEVER forget what she did for me! I don’t find the whole Luann and Fay story line boring at all…to some of us, it IS real life!
Meanwhile, backstage: Oh no! our actress who plays Glinda can’t make it and there is no understudy – Quick rush out into the theater and see if anyone in the audience knows the part.
Unlike several other posters here, I find the Fay arcs interesting. But I honestly thought that the ‘toon showing Fay dressed in a princess-good witch costume was a great ending for the arc. I was surprised to find that we were still with Fay and Luann today. But there’s a reason for everything in a fantasy universe (unlike our depressingly real world, with its leukemia, Crohn’s disease, war and bullies). So I wonder what surprise awaits Fay and Luann at this school production of ‘Wizard of Oz’…
It usually takes us readers a while, but we are starting to get what this arc is really about. Luann will get a glimmer of the power of an older role model in the life of a suffering person. And that’s true even if the “role model” herself doesn’t quite live up to the persona being advertised. We carry about much more wisdom than we have quite taken to heart.
I am in a bit of “mood” this morning, so I thought I would create several “wacky” continuations of the story arc (I sincerely hope NONE of them happen, and doubt any will):
1. Real “Munchhausen by Proxy” is identified in Fay’s family, and she is removed from her home. Then Luann becomes her Foster Parent or adopts her. This could complement all of the “Brad & Toni adopt Shannon” discussion that has transpired over the years.
2. The real “Da, da, da!!!!” moment is when Luann and Fay are seated to watch the play and just before showtime….. the Stage Director/Choreographer comes on stage to warm up the crowd….. and (screechy noises) it is none other than QUILL!!!! Luann is unfortunately caught off guard…. and without wanting to…. begins to “swoon” for Quill again. Her twitterpation is readily apparent, even to Fay.
3. The secret of the arc is in the line about Fay’s Mom having the “Flu”….. The play is only a ruse and goes on normally, but on Tuesday and Wednesday we discover that Fay’s Mom is diagnosed with a very virulent strain of flu that has potential to cause a pandemic…… and Thursday everyone is panicking…. and then…… “Da, da, da…..” suddenly Rosa flies into Pitts Semi-International Airport….. and we learn that she has been secretly working on a universal flu treatment all the while during her time in Peru and attending an early admission, on-line medical school while doing all the other Peruvian things she had dreamed of. She is now back in the States for the next two years as she is going to start her clinical rotations at the newly minted “Mooney Medical School Hospital”.
* * * *
Now, if any of the above become true…. I will eat my hat…. and my pipe…. and my ceramic coffee cup. :)
Fay practiced as Glinda. So I predict the Glinda character has also come down with the flu, and Fay gets to fill in for the performance. Too bad her Mom will miss it.
@BRDSHTT: I may not be remembering correctly, but I thought that when Rosa was hugging Gunther, he had an expression on his face that was either surprise, or just that he was already thinking ahead to his ‘real life’, getting his mother back to the little silo he envisioned her to occupy. (Which was about living in a granny flat on the grounds of his picket-fenced home, ready at all times to babysit his kids when he decides to step out a bit with his booksmart wife.)
Luann, on the other hand, is smiling at Fay, so I don’t think it’s the same as when Gunther stood like a stick. I think Luann was just caught by surprise, so she wasn’t ready with open arms. That’s all…
I’ve been somewhat out of touch for the last 3 months or so. ( Airman needed big repair to his engine.) So forgive me if this question has already been brought up. Seems to me that mama may have Munchausen’s Syndrome where she imagines and invents diseases and symptoms for Fay, so that people give mama the sympathy and attention and admire her.
Graphic note: Luann’s profile in the last panel, especially when set by Fay’s dark hair – looks very nicely done! Greg’s artwork really brings it home.
Gunther’s ‘concern’ for his mother was concern that (despite that fact that he felt like she smothered him), he was more afraid of her starting to share her life with someone other than him. That isn’t caring about someone. That’s trying to control them.
Wait, don’t tell me, let me guess: the flu that Fay’s mother caught also infected both the girl who was going to play Glinda and her understudy. If ONLY there was SOMEBODY there who knew the role…
In as much as Fay has not actually read the play (she didn’t know if was a musical, didn’t know if the Flying Monkeys had lines) so she can not take over anyone’s place in the play. So the only way forward with them going to the play is who they meet there. Luann seeing Quill seems unlikely. But Fay meeting Axel seems very likely.

I don’t want to be cheated and see an already slimming Tiffany.
For the play, let’s see if the break a leg person actually breaks a leg.

Of course, Dorothy is whisked away to a land ruled by an evil witch who wants to kill her, and she wants to go home, but don’t let that slow you down.
